New Parent Group Eeek!

Started by Candice , author of Lilly through the valley 6/20/2012 5:06:56 PM

I am not a fan of parent groups cause well I never fit in. Some local parents have decided to start a special needs playgroup for kids with special needs and siblings. Yes I am going because I have said that the community needs something..What is your strategies when entering a new parent group??

Great question!

I think I would start off with themes of interest amoungst the group members. I would ask all the parents what goals they have with this group. Than I would ask them to write it down. Than I would put all the ideas in a container. At each meeting, pick a goal out of the container. That is a great way to brake the ice, and keep the topics flowing.

We used to do that at the McGill School of Social Work. Keep us posted!

Oh, I have to admit, I am not good in situations like that.  But I also tend to do things like that, even if I'm not comfortable, for my kids.  It's taken 2 years with playdates with the same family for me to actually not feel weird.  LOL.

I wish I had some strategies to share, but honestly I could use some too!
