How did you decide on your baby's name?

Started by Annie , author of Mama Dweeb 7/2/2012 6:00:10 AM

Her name is Lucy. She is our baby and has always been full of surprises - even from the moment I found out I was pregnant. Yeah, totally wasn't expecting that. Since she was such a (wonderful) shock, I had no idea what we were going to name her.

And yes, I knew she was a she before I even went to the sonogram.

While I didn't name all my kids with the same letter or sound like some families, Lizzie and David have one thing in common - both are regal names. Queen Elizabeth and King David. Both are strong names and have a classical feel to them.

So I wanted to keep with that same feeling. I wanted this baby to be regal. But the only Queen name I could think of was Isabella. And "Lizzie" and "Izzie" was just too similar. (And looking at Lucy, she is so not an Isabelle)

Then we saw "I am Sam." Dakota Fanning played a little blond girl named Lucy. And I remembered the Narnia books - Queen Lucy! Regal, classic, and just unique enough for me.

Lucille. My Lucy Goosey! The name fits her so perfectly.

It wasn’t easy, but that is how I decided on my baby’s name. How did you decide on your baby’s name? Or do you have a great story on how your parents decided on your name? Tell me for a chance to win a year’s supply of cards from Cardstore.com!

Each of my children have some part of their names which is a family memeber's name; including their Dad and me. I believe it is important to have strong family ties.

Pamela - I gave Lucy my middle name too. We didn't pass on Josh's names at all.....we wanted to though.

My children all have a portion of their names dedicated to a family member. Our oldest, Makenna Ann, is Ann after my grandmother's middle name. Our middle child, Maddox Joy, is Joy after my mother's middle name. Our youngest, James Eric, is James for hubs' grandfather (especially since they're almost 100yrs a part to the day) and Eric, since that's my husband's first name and the tradition for the first son.

Dave actually named our girls. I made a list and he picked out the one he liked best with both girls. While originally with Chloe I was not thinking about having them start with the same letter of my name I did want to keep the pattern with Caelyn. My only request when name Chloe was that the name had to go with Nicole because that was a must for a middle name. I wanted her to have my sister's name.

She is so cute! And I think her name fits her perfectly. :) My husband suggested our daughter's name, and I liked it. It seemed to just click and we talked about others but always came back to Kaylee. :)

Sophia has always been on my girl list, even after having 2 other girls...it just wasn't fitting until my third. Her middle name, Gertrude, was chosen because both my husband's grandma and my grandma's middle names are Gertrude. My grandma passed away almost 3 years ago and I wanted to carry on her name. My husband's grandma was so honored to have one of her great grandchildren named after her and I know my grandma would have loved it too! They have the same spunk and personalities. But all three of our girls have middle names named after a family member.

My name Jennifer, was a compromise from my parents. My dad wanted Jane after my mom and his mom...My mom DID NOT want Jane. My mom when she was little was called Jenny Wren, aka Jenny, so Jennifer was born and I was called Jenny as a tribute to my mom. I used to hate being one of 1000 Jennifer's in school, but now that I know the background, I love my name.

Annie, My name came from the Cherry Ames books. When my mom was a little girl she read all the books - they are about a nurse that travels the world, solves mysteries, and has a different love interest in every book. When she grew up she eventually became a nurse herself. Her first husband didn't like the name Cherry so my sister is Tammy, but my dad is kind of a push-over and that is how I got the name Cherry. My middle name came from a box of Queen Anne Chocolate covered Cherries.
