Living the respect #LiveLikeTheLorax

Started by Annie , author of Mama Dweeb 3/1/2012 11:00:10 PM

We live on 20 acres of wooded land. It is impossible not to use this gorgeous area as continuous education for my children. My husband and I do not take our beautiful acreage for granted. In fact, as we are adding onto our house, Josh refuses to hire anyone because he knows they will want to cut down a tree or two. He respects the age of our huge trees and will work around them instead of bulldozing them down.

He is a bit like the Lorax in that way.

I cannot wait to take my kids to see the Lorax! It has a wonderful message about respect for the environment. This message is one that I teach my kids through my daily life and every spring when we plant our garden.

Every year my kids go out with us to play among the plants. We teach them about how the sun gives the plants light to grow and the rain quenches their thirst. Then, as the plants grow bigger we are able to eat them. Letting Lizzie and David help nurture the vegetables from seed to plate is a huge life lesson that I hope they carry with them their entire life.

Perhaps as they grow older they will have a garden. Maybe the values we lived when they were children will stay with them. I sure hope so.

There are other ways we live green - not as many as other people, I admit. But I do try. I used to cloth diaper my children. In fact, I cloth diapered all three up until life got crazy busy a few months ago. Now I use disposables.  Thankfully there are earth friendly ways to use sposies! Seventh Generation - known already for being a very earth friendly brand - has a line of Wee Gen diapers! Check this out:

Wee Gen are ---

• Free of chlorine processing
• Free of fragrances and latex
• Free of petroleum-based lotions
• Premium absorbency
• Hypoallergenic

I don't know about you, but this is exciting. They cut down on the use of over processed pulp and don't use petroleum-based lotions. No petroleum? That rocks, since you know, petroleum is not renewable.

I have fantastic news!!

One of MY readers (Yes, could be YOU!) will win a Green Your Home pack! (winner will be picked after the campaign has ended (April 30th))

Using eco-friendly products is an important step toward teaching my children about conservation, and Seventh Generation and Dr. Seuss' The Lorax have joined forces to inspire families to save the earth's resources with conscious consumption. Created with our little ones and the environment in mind, Seventh Generation is the natural choice for high-quality and effective products free of fragrances, latex, chlorine and other harmful chemicals. Up until this past week (we just moved across country) we had our own chickens for eggs, recycled, cloth diapered, cloth napkins and towels in kitchen (instead of disposable), etc. Now, we just need to get settled and back into a routine here. :)

We live like the Lorax by using cloth diapers and wipes. We use eco-friendly cleaning products and laundry detergents. We recycle as much as possible and do not use paper products, instead we use cloth wipes, towels, and napkins!

Our biggest goal is to consume and therefore waste less. Many things we purchase have packaging that goes straight to the garbage.

My family recycles newspapers, bottles and cans. We also try not to waste electricity, or water and donate items we are not using. I also use natural cleaning products and I do use Seventh Generation products!

We recycle everything we can, compost, grow our own vegetables, protect the ravine in our yard and add trees to our yard, use mostly just vinegar for cleaning, use cloth diapers and don't use baby wipes (if I have to use disposables I use 100% compostable diapers). Try to only buy things we need. Have few electronics in our home and keep the old ones running rather than replacing which would add to the landfills. When we do any of our renovations we try to choose green products and keep the waste to a minimum as well and only do what needs to be done. Take our own bags to the store. Teaching our daughter a love and respect for the outdoors.
