How Do You Schedule Meal Times While Camping?

Started by Tiffany , author of A Little Campy 7/9/2012 2:31:04 AM

Meal times while camping can be a little tricky.  With so many great  outdoor activities, how do you deal with meal time?

We are spending the week at the beach.  We usually have 2 big meals, so we can fit in more outdoor fun.  We like to have breakfast and "lupper"-- a cross between lunch and supper.  If you are from up North, you might call this meal "linner."  Both are made up names, of course, but they do describe the meal. We usually have a late snack to tide us over until morning.

So how do you schedule and deal with meal times while camping?

Also, July's Live Chat at KOA.com will be on the importance of campfire safety and the things we do to ensure a successful and safe camping trip.  This is an especially important topic due to all the wildfires burning in many states.

Join us for the Live Chat Wednesday, July 11th at 9pm EST at KOA.com.  I'm looking forward to chatting with you soon!

Most of my kiddos are pretty young.  Bfast is what we eat when we first get up, lunch happens right before naps, dinner - sometime later in the evening.  We have bowls of fruit/snacks available all day.

We don't do as many organized activities as just sitting at the campground is enough for my kids now :)

Mine are older so we have a little more flexibility I think. It's just whenever fits best for what we're doing that day. It seems we spend less and less energy on planning ahead as they get older. (sigh of relief....)

We always have breakfast and dinner scheduled. Lunch is more on your own. I have sandwich stuff and fruit available, but people usually just eat when they are hungry.

We never plan any meal other breakfast.  Everyone is too busy doing their own think to get them to set down at a particular time.  Whenever meals happen, they happen:)  We snack a lot when we camp.

With 3 young kids, we go through a lot of food!!  So we have menus for each meal, planning out who brings what.  That said, Breakfast happens once everyone gets up, Lunch is usually on the road/activity we are doing and Dinner happens when we get back to camp.  We always have too much food, but that's what makes it awesome!!

We always camp with the same family (we are 5 and so are they)...all 6 kids in the group are under 8 so we try to stick to our regular schedule. When the kids 1st get up they are always allowed to have small boxes of cereal (always a camp tradition with us), homemade muffins and fruit. They once all the adults are up, we make the eggs, bacon etc....by then the kids are playing something 8) Lunch - usually always cooked (dogs, burgers etc) but this weekend when we camp we are just doing sandwiches (been so hot lately). Dinner is always big! We have been making a spiral ham the morning of leaving to camp and have it for dinner...but we are changing it up this time....sliders, nacho bar.... Love camping - so do the kids! 8)

We tend to do big breakfasts, and dinners, lunch sometimes goes by the wayside, because we are so busy on the water, hiking or exploring. I have older children so I dont feel so guilty but we always have great snacks at hand such as fruits, chips and other munchies.
