How Far Would You Go For An Incredible Camping Trip?

Started by Tiffany , author of A Little Campy 6/18/2012 10:49:01 PM

My family loves to tent camp. I have read several blog posts recently by Val at Valinreallife.com.  Val and her family including her husband, 2 young sons and their Beagle have driven from Georgia to California to go tent camping...in the Mojave Desert.

It sounds amazing--tent camping in the Mojave Desert, that is.  Driving across country with young children and a dog--not so amazing (in my opinion).  That sounds stressful.  Which has me thinking,

How far would you go for an incredible camping experience?  How far have you gone for a camping trip?  How far from home do you normally camp?

I don't enjoy really long car rides with my children, lol...so about 3 hours is usually our limit for a camping trip.

We like to camp locally, but travel once a year from Texas to the East Coast for a family gathering.  Sometimes we drive straight through (taking shifts for drivers - it's a 28 hour drive) other times we stop at cabins along the way.

We tend to stay local most of the time, but do make some big trips every now and then.  If I am going to travel, I want the site to be something special...perhaps a volcano, or Ziplines in a rainforest!  We did camp at the bottom of the Grand Canyon and that was very fun!

We tend to camp locally, especially for those let's just get out of the house and stress getaways.  We do like to take a camping trip further away at least once a year.

We will travel further if we are going to stay in a cabin vs our tent.

Of course, traveling with 3 kids (1 is a toddler) is our biggest consideration.  Does the coolness of the campsite outweigh the stress of the drive with the kids??

So, Dan-- volcanos, rainforest with ziplines.  I can see where those might warrant a longer trip, even with kids and tent setup. smiley

As much as I think it would be fun to take a cross country road trip with my family I'm not sure I could do it. We are driving from Florida to Virginia this summer and that might be all I can take!

I do think camping out west would be amazing. It is so pretty out there!

Depends on the circumstances... we try and stay local for an overnight trip, while a longer trip takes us further afield.

We usually camp locally, or no more than 2 hours from home. But last summer we took a three week cross country trip and camped in many different places; that was awesome! (The furthest was Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho; which has a spectacular campground, by the way.) My youngest was 5 at the time and my kids were already used to road trips from young ages.

The Craters of the Moon National Monument sounds incredible! There are so many places I would like to visit. Adding that one to the list!

We will be taking the 10hr trek tomorrow to camp in Grant Teton National Park. We travel a lot and J-man is use to long car rides. You figure out what works to entertain them and what makes them happy and it gets easier. We will be making the drive from Moab to the east coast one day for camping, for sure. Great discussion!
