Do you get into a power struggle over food with your child?

We believe food is food. If the kid wants to eat, they will eat. When Lilly doesn't eat supper she still gets offered desert. The fact is Lilly eats tiny meals every 2-3 hours. So over all she is eating healthy food all day long. If she isn't into what I am serving for supper (for what ever reason) that is okay because I know she has had good food all day.

I never label food as healthy food, good food or bad food. I never make one meal more important then another. As result Lilly eats everything and anything.

I recently watched a power struggle between parents and their child over food. I was wondering how do you cope with it? (So when I baby sit this kid I will have an idea on how to handle it)

I am not sure how to handle it once it is established.  My kids don't give me a hard time with food, there are very few things that they will actually eat.  But we worked with them and got them into a variety of foods since they were little.

Some of my daughters' friends were a little bit more picky and I used to ask them what they liked if we invited them to stay for dinner.  If they asked to stay for dinner I would let them know what I was cooking.  Often times I can add a couple spices such as garlic and I would get them to try it.  There have been times they went back home and their parents asked me how I got them to eat something they refused to eat at home!

My niece is the same way. She will eat things for me that my sister in law couldn't believe. Personally I just keep re introducing food types in different forms

Oh I'm bad about this..I don't make my kids eat everything but I do want them to try it..I can be a little fanatical about food.  It's good your laid back about it..of course now that my kids are older ..I TRY to keep my mouth shut...:)

That's a great way to look at foods - especially with kids that are eating a lot of good food throughout the day. Keeping good foods in the house but not labeling them as "healthy" or "unhealthy" is a great way to keep a positive focus on the foods they eat.
