Getting DHA and Omega-3s in My Kids' Diet

Started by Jodi , author of Boston mom review blog - kids' products, mom fashion, beauty, wellness 10/26/2011 9:30:10 AM

Fish and other seafood has always been a big part of my diet.  Growing up in Rhode Island, I had access to some of the freshest seafood available, some of which was caught by my dad.  I grew up with it, so I never thought about it being something that wasn't kid-friendly.

Until I had my own kids.  Fish just isn't something they are interested in eating.  But fish, especially fatty fish, contains Omega-3s which are so important for brain, heart, and eye development and health.  So, it's important that I get my kids to eat foods rich in Omega-3s - even if it isn't easy.

One of my favorite recipes growing up was salmon and rice, and it's definitely a kid-friendly recipe that doesn't have a strong fishy taste.  To prepare it, you'll need:

  • A few teaspoons of tomato paste
  • Salt and paper to taste
  • four cups of rice
  • 14-oz of cooked salmon (you can use canned salmon)

Prepare the rice according to the directions and add the salmon.  Stir in the tomato paste slowly, then add salt and pepper to taste.

This recipe is easy to prepare and tastes great!

DHA belongs to a category of healthy fatty acids known as Omega-3's. DHA is a major structural fat in the body, and has been shown to support brain, heart and eye health. Not only is DHA found in foods like salmon and eggs, but it can also be found in Horizon® Organic Milk enhanced with DHA Omega-3. I get omega 3's into my boys diets by cooking them eggs for breakfast 5-6 times per week, also by purchasing Horizon's omega-3 DHA whole milk :) These are both staples in our household for my two growing baby boys!

I have a thrift store bought coffee bean grinder dvoted especially to flax seed. I grind flax and add it to my bread, my cookies, my cakes and even my homemade pizza dough. While my family likes salmon, it is difficult to get them to eat more than once a week. I like to make salmon burgers or fish tacos using salmon to mix things up. The flax seed trick ensures that we are having our omega's each and every day. The pizza dough is easy- I try to use a cup of flax to 2 cups flour and a tad more honey in the dough. The children love love love this pizza!

I use products like Horizon milk & Organic Valley eggs w/Omega-3. I try to serve fattier fish like salmon regularly. We also eat grass-fed meats, which contain more Omega-3s.

I do many things scramble Organic Valley eggs, add eggs to meatloaf, grind up flax seed and add it to almost everything.  I will be trying the pizza dough from above post.

I keep a bag of flax seed in the fridge and add it to just about everything from homemade bread to muffins to cookies. My daughter's favorite is our Saturday morning ritual of chocolate, peanut butter and coconut pancakes. We use Horizon DHA milk, DHA fortified vegetable oil and a small handful of flax seeds. They are gobbled up every time!

HAPPYTOTS with Salba. This super grain has 8x more Omega-3s than salmon per serving. It's also rich in fiber, antioxidants, magnesium and other vitamins and minerals. And kids love squeezies.

Some of the ways that we ensure that our family of 4 gets their Omega 3 each and everyday is by buying only horizon organic milk with dha omega 3, only using Pompeian olive oil with added 1160 mg of omega 3 per serving for all of our cooking and even to drizzle onto fresh salads, using walnuts as a topping to our kid's yogurts or just as a plain snack, eating salmon or Tuna at least once a week, horizon omega 3 eggs, omega 3 butter, adding brain strong dha omega 3 supplements to our toddlers daily homemade organic oatmeal w/ fresh fruits and finally by giving our big girl brain strong omega 3 chewable gummies along with her daily flinstones w/added omega 3 gummy multivitamins! We know the importance of omega 3 in our family's diet and we love taking advantage of every opportunity to ensure our family gets it every single day! :)

Tofu lettuce wraps,  walnuts in kung pao tofu,  oatmeal, veggie burgers, and Horizon Omega 3 Chocolate Milk are some of the ways that my family enjoys Omega 3 foods without even noticing.

I use flax in place of eggs in a lot of my baking. My kids also love the Horizon chocolate milk boxes in their lunches.
