To Garden or Not?

Started by Sue , author of Country Pleasures 4/14/2011 3:10:32 PM

I'm wondering if your planting a garden this year? With the cost of food higher by the day, it seems, I think it's only wise to grow what you can. I've heard more people than ever before are turning to gardening to help cut the cost of living? Are you one of them?

Unfortunately, I don't have a place to get free manure. We are going to be getting some goats as soon as we get a little barn for them in the pasture that we've just had fenced, and I'm planning on getting a few rabbits, so I'll have manure from them, too. We do have the chicken manure out of our small chicken house.

I liked gardening in the square foot beds last year. Our tomatoes did really well until that scorching heat killed them. This is the first year we've grown any early crops in the square foot beds and I'm very pleased at the way our lettuce and green onions are doing.

If you are gardening in boxes, then I'd say you're pretty much doing square foot gardening!

We have raised both rabbits and goats over the years, both have excellent manure so you should be good to go! lol
