Best Pets for Kids

Our kids are almost 6, almost 5 and 18 months. Our oldest started asking for a pet as soon as she could talk. We have two dogs but she is a major animal lover and wanted more. We tried cats when she was younger but she never got hold of the "don't hold them by the throat" theory and we had to give them away.

But we got them a guinea pig for christmas and we all have fallen deeply in love with him. I think he has been an ideal pet for them.

What are some other pets that you think are good for little ones?

BTW... I don't consider snakes a pet. I consider them a squirmy nightmare.

I am falling more and more in love with our guinea pig everyday. Sheesh the thing is cute and he puts up with a lot!

I had a guinea pig when I was a kid and I did love it. We have two dogs and we had a cat for 15 years and just recently lost her. My son "adopts" anything he finds in our yard. We've had tree frogs, turtles, toads and the cutest baby raccoon that didn't even have his eyes open. By the way, we do set them free again as soon as possible. Except for Lucky the raccoon whom we found a rehab farm for. No kidding.

Rehab farm? I love it. I have a 12 year old dog that is starting to show his age and I know it's going to be sad when that day comes.

I grew up with mice, but don't highly recommend it lol (they don't live very long and can be as nasty as hamsters). I've heard chinchillas make nice family pets, and I've always been a fan of rabbits :)

Wao a guinea pig, that's an interesting pet! A little dog or a turtle are my favorite pets for small kids
