Make it Happen Monday: Cycling for your Heart

Started by Darryl , author of lovingthebike.com 2/13/2012 4:30:10 AM

Could your Heart use an extra workout this month?  As part of our regular Make it Happen Monday series, we're hoping to inspire you to take part in the Quaker Heart Health Challenge.  It's a fantastic event being put on by the good folks at Quaker to promote the importance of having a healthy heart, and to inspire people to make exercise a part of their heart healthy lifestyle.

When we were asked to take part and help promote this event, I was definitely all in.

Here's the deal...Quaker wants everyone to commit to doing 15 fitness activities in 30 days, and you can join in on this challenge by Entering Right Here.  As you probably already know, I put a lot of time in on the bike and will be putting in much more than 15 days of riding over the next 30 days.  But what I am personally doing for this challenge is committing to getting the rest of my Family active over the next 30 days....plus any of you who would like to join us.  I'm going to make sure my Wife and Kids get out running, biking, or walking at least 15 times by getting involved in these activities with them.

February is National Heart Health month, so it's the perfect time to commit to making your heart healthier.  I know a lot of our readers are in the same situation as me and won't have a problem getting in a bunch of activity.  But if this isn't the case, let's use this event and the activity of cycling to get you moving.  Even if it’s only 5 more minutes a day, what extra step will you take to stay fit?

Join the Quaker Heart Health Challenge and also get in on a chance to win $750.  Simply compete these two steps and you're in to win:

1.  Share the challenge with your friends.
2.  Tell us that you’ve invited your friends to join the challenge AND share what motivates you to stay healthy in the comments section below.

I am in the process of training for a cross country bike trip so this will be a good way to keep track of my workouts and raise some money for affordable housing!

I've invited my friends to the Quaker Challenge AND I'm workout to start my day off on a positive note, clear my head, and inspire people around me. My family has a history of high cholesterol and heart disease, so this is my way of fighting the trend.

What motivates me to stay healthy? Life. Family. Before I started biking in 2010, my BP and cholesterol numbers were high. At the point where my doc was considering putting me on meds, given the family history. Now, eat better and bike often. And my numbers are back to normal. And, yes, I've shared the challenge!

I did the challenge!!!! Although I primarily use DailyMile to track my fitness, the Map My Run interface was pretty easy to navigate - that's always a plus! Anything that will keep people accountable for their own fitness is a good thing!
