Blog reader question.

Started by Amanda , author of The Educators' Spin On It 11/8/2011 9:38:03 AM

Kim and I (the blog authors) both have kindergarteners and so do many of our readers!  We posted about sight word activities here http://theeducatorsspinonit.blogspot.com/2011/11/afterschool-express-sight-word-games.html and recieved  this question.  "I am curious if you have a suggestion for my problem - my daughter is a very fluent whole word reader, and she has no trouble whatsoever with reading high-frequency words. Spelling them, however, is entirely different matter. How can I help her slow down and actually pay attention to the letters in the words?"

Her daughter is a very intelligent "new" 5 year old.  There are so many approaches to teaching reading, I would love to hear the advice that you would give - please comment before reading my thoughts (in the comment section of the post)

Hi Amanda,

This is the same topic I'm exploring on my blog and in another discussion at we teach. You'll find my ideas about teaching words as whole words there. My daughter had problems with this way of teaching. This caused me to take a closer look at teaching sight words. I'm going to check out your post.

Thanks for adding this discussion. It seems to be a controversial topic, and definately one worth discussing.

Michelle - that is a great post.  I would love it if you left a link in the comment section for my readers!  Reading is such a vast topic and many families are trying their best to help their children become successful readers.  It is great to hear from different experts and sources!!!!  I like your follow up activities posts as many of us know that we can make flash cards - but what to do with them???  I am excited to learn more from you!

Would you (or any other community members) be interested in doing a professional book study in January?  I have been thinking about blogging about it.  Not sure if any other bloggers wanted to work together as a team?  I've been trying to read "Raising Confident Readers." by Gentry and it is very helpful, but technical.  Talking and writing about it with others would be helpful to me.  Any one interested???

I'd be interested. I own this book and have skimmed through it. I agree. It is a little technical. I think I'd be able to read and post about a chapter per week.

My posts would highlight maybe one or two things or give an overview. I'm not sure yet. Each chapter may call for a different approach. I can imagine adding links to other blogger posts about the same chapter at the end my weekly posts.

Do you think we should direct bloggers interested in this book study to this forum?

What are your thoughts?

I'd love another book study on 7 Keys to Comprehension after Raising Confident Readers if we can make the book study work.
