Would you leash your child?

Started by Sarah , author of The Stroller Ballet 10/23/2010 5:54:15 PM

I did it. I bought a leash for Peanut at Buy Buy Baby today. I am desperate - she wants to walk everywhere, and I'm really scared of the urban traffic we're facing. But I've heard that some people are adamantly opposed to leashing a toddler. What's your take?

I didn't with my first, but I didn't know they were available and she was pretty easy. But, now I have twins...I'll totally be leashing them when they're on the loose in crowded areas like airports.

I think it's an issue when they're abused - like dragging your kid around on the floor like that one lady did in a Verizon store - she was arrested if I'm not mistaken.

I do it to my daughter and will get one for my son soon. She loves her doggy backpack! The safety of my children is more important than the odd looks I get.

This is a great discussion...I never saw anything wrong with it because of safety.  I'm more concerned with giving my kids a little independence and keeping them safe than I am with what other people think.  Of course I never had one of those obnoxious people actually say anything to my face...

I found the most adorable little set that I used to wear with my daughter...it was sort of like a front pack for me to wear with zip pockets and it had a retractable lead on it.  She wore a little bear front pack, like a little bear purse, and it had a clip on it that kept us together.

It was so cute...we used to take walks and she'd fill her little purse/pack with rocks or treasures.  To be honest, it's one of those favorite baby momentoes I can't get rid of!

I did!

When my daughter was a toddler she would run and never turn back to see if we followed.  We used it in busy places.

With my son I never used it...didn't need to.

I think it depends on the child.

Isabella isnt old enough for one yet. Shes walking but shes not one to really move too far away. Although she loves to wander around the house. But shes not willing to wander away too far yet from me or her Daddy.

But I agree with a lot that has been said. It truly depends on the child. And with children there really cant be any absolutes. Some of the leashes I think are a bit much, but some of them are really cute. If we had to use something like that for Isabella I would go with one of the cuter options.

My youngest brother was always on the move and on meds that hyped him up. Coupled with being super friendly and talkative... I totally understand why my mother did it. She didn't stand a chance at keeping up with him. If Little G goes in that direction, then we'll have a leash too. I can take the looks, it's losing my little guy that I couldn't take.

my kids are 6, 4 and 2.  My oldest is high functioning autistic and whenever I go somewhere where I can't contain him, I put him on a leash just in case.  I can trust him more but he still runs or wanders sometimes.  My 4 yo always obey and will hold onto the stroller and my 2 yo is always in the stroller.  I'm about Safety all the way!!
