Advice to a newbie

Started by Maryann 6/5/2012 7:08:48 PM

Hello! I'm new to this couponing business but, I did get my first rush when I paid 20 dollars for a 40 dollar trip to the grocery store! I know this is nothing for some of y'all but, I was impressed. I gladly will take any advice anyone has for me because i'm hoping to see that number go down!!

SouthernSavers makes doing couponing much easier.  Keep at it and you will get more comfortable as well as saving money.  Don't worry about comparing what you save to what others save - every circumstance is different.  Just be happy for every penny that you save as it is a penny more.  My one piece of advice would be not to try and get every single deal out there - it will drive you nuts.  Everyone goes about saving in a different way, you just have to find the way that works best for you and your family.

Keep up the good work and welcome!

I agree with Jill trying to get every deal will definitely drive you insane! & learn what YOUR stock up price for items that your family needs, that also helps out alot! Dont get discouraged and southern savers is defintely a life saver and helps makes things so much easier! Last is PLAN PLAN PLAN and try not to get burnt out on doing too much at one time!

start out with one store (I did the grocery store) and get comfortable with that before trying to get all of the deals.  As the others have already said, you will find what way works best for you.  AND  I never go grocery shopping without my list and coupons.  I usually stick to my list unless I found a clearanced item but if I stray from my list then my savings usually goes down and my spending goes up.  You have already done great.  If I save more than I pay, then I am happy.  I usually average about 60-70% and no more than that.

You will also start seeing sales cycles as you go along.  Like right now, you will find alot of condiments, hots dogs etc on sale and have coupons to go with them.  Around the holidays you will find more holiday sales etc.   Good luck.

Welcome ! I agree wholeheartedly with what everyone else has said. And I think 50% is great! My savings vary . On a really good sale week like Kroger Mega events I will save 60 to 70%. But that' not every week. I would say to keep in mind that numbers , % savings will vary based on several factors such as if you buy staple items like milk, fresh fruit, or meat that you don't have coupons for along with your high value sale items. Don't get discouraged and keep the total picture in mind. You will reap your biggest savings at the drugstore on non food items( CVS, Walgreens, etc.). Those will at times net you a profit or give you savings of 75 to 90% or more. My advice: don't be mislead by the extreme couponing show. Folks do not legitimately, routinely save that much! It can discourage you quickly.

Good for you. My advice would be to match BOGO sales with coupons for the best deals. Also, I love to look for clearance items when I'm shopping that I can match with my coupons. I use a zippered makeup bag (about the size of a recipe box) to carry my coupons with me when I'm shopping. I have coupons cut and divided by categories for ease of use. I've found great deals that weren't advertised.

Best wishes.

Way to go! I've learned so much in the last 4 months or so that I've been doing this. I love using this site! But I also remember Jenny isn't God and that even she is going to miss a few things now and again! Keep your eyes peeled and look over the ads yourself when they come in the paper. Somethings are local and you'll get additional deals along with what gets posted here. Also I make sure to always bring along my makeup, laundry, and skincare, and bath coupon with me in case anythings on clearance! great way to donate stuff for charity!smiley
