Steam mop question

Started by Sarah 4/29/2012 10:21:35 AM

I am looking to invest in a steam mop for my kitchen floor. Do any of ya'll have one and can give me some feedback on what I should look for and if all the bells and whistles are worth it?

Thanks!

Hi Sarah,

I purchased one a couple of mops ago. I love a clean floor. I have found that it is a lot of work to use.  I thought it would be something that I would whip out a few times a week.  It has not turned out that way. I find it easier to pull out my carpet cleaner and use the hard floor attachments.

All steam mops are not created equally. You really need to do some research about the various mops in relation to what you are wanting to accomplish. After weeks of looking at various brands of steam mops I purchased a Haan Slim and Light off of amazon. I love this mop, for me the most important feature was the ability to sanitize my floors while cleaning them. This mop is light and heats water in excess of 215 degrees Fahrenheit which kills a larger variety of bacteria than just food borne germs and dust mites. With 2 dogs I no longer have to put them up while I mop as this dries almost instantly and unlike other mops that required you to mop over a spot for 15 seconds to kill germs this one only takes 1 second so I can actually mop and not have to pause every few seconds. The main drawback is that the water reservoir tank is not as large on this as some other brands. For me this isn't an issue as I'm not cleaning large rooms but it could be an issue for some, I also ordered extra micro fiber cloths so that I can clean all my rooms at once and wash the cloths at the same time. Other wise its a mop, wash, and wait situation for each room.

Mostly just do the research make sure to look into the features such as:

Size and weight, number of steam jet holes across the head, water temperature, size of the water reservoir, multi-functional (ie. floors, counters, walls, ect.), length of the extension cord, cleaning pads and care required for them, and of course cost. You should be able to find something that meets your needs and budget. Good luck!

I don't know the specs on mine, but my aunt gave us a Bissell steam mop. We really didn't think we would care for it, but we love it! Makes the floors clean enough to eat off of. It's all we use to mop with. I love the reusable washable pads. No cleaner required, so I know my boys are safe playing on the floor.

I have a Shark Vac n Steam but I do not recommend it at all. I find that it gets up messes well as in dried chocolate pudding and the like. But when I use it on my kitchen floor I still feel like the floor is sticky and dirty. I've heard good things about the Bissell mop and hope to invest in one soon.

I love my shark! I got it at walmart for around 80.00, I think it works wonderful, I clean my tile and my hardwood with it (actually we have laminante hardwood) no sticky floors at my house!

I agree with Darsay. I also have the haan and I love it.  I can clean my floors each evening in about 15 minutes (I do the whole house). I have 3 dogs so I like to do a quick clean each evening.

I have found that the key to using the steam mop is that when you clean your floors with it the first time, you will need to go over it several times so that you can get the build up off the floor.  After that its really easy and quick.

Good luck...

I have a Bissell one. I use a little glass cleaner that I spray on the floor, then run my steamer over it. It's probably not necessary, but I just can't let myself just mop with steam. Plus I have a nice supply of Glass Plus cleaner that I got with coupons several months ago :) Mine came with two reusable pads. If I could change anything about it, I would like to have more pads. I can buy them separately, but it is almost $20 for two. I bought my steamer at Fred's. It was a factory reconditioned one.

I have a shark and cannot recommend it.  Its not at all what I expected.  I thought that I would use it all the time, but I don't.  I "spot-clean" with a wash cloth and only use it when I need to clean the whole floor at once.  It does beat the old mop I was using...I was using the swiffer and got sick of paying for pads/cleaner.  I am going to get a bissell soon!

i have a shark but its the shark euro pro and they pretty much dont make them anymore. I love it. You can use it for more then the floor if you want. had to make my own extra pads cause couldn't find them to buy. However most of them you can get pads for on ebay for very cheap.
