Do you know the law regarding alcohol tags in your state?

Started by mary 4/10/2012 4:32:05 AM

Alcohol tags on wine and beer in the grocery stores offers some nice coupons & rebates. Read the wording carefully, in some states it is against the law for you to be required to make an alcohol purchase in order to participate. The states are usually printed on rebate forms/coupons, albeit in sometimes very small print, take a minute the next time you are in your store to find these.

Look for these tags on wine bottles, on tear pads in the beer section or on the counter in the alcohol department (although some state laws prohibit putting the tags on the bottles it seems this is not always adhered to). Many times the coupons pair up nicely with the alcohol & season, such as beer with chip, dip & snack items during football season, or wine with fish, meat, produce during grilling season.

In another thread I mentioned using these without making an alcohol purchase. NCCheermom says her daughter works in a store and both her daughter and the manager considers this stealing. If the "NC" in her nickname stands for North Carolina either her daughter does not work in a store in NC or her daughter and the manager have not read the tags/forms, and are unaware of the law, all entirely possible. Most of us know that store personnel, even managers, seem to be not always aware of the policies.

NC is one of the staes that by law forbids the manufacturer to require the consumer to make an alcohol purchase in order to participate. So are other states in which many of you shop. The manufacturers know this and choose to make these offers available in those states. No matter how uninformed store personnel may be, you are in no way stealing if you take the manufacturer up on the offer they extended to shoppers in your state.

As always, know the coupon policy and even better, your state law, when shopping. Abide by the terms and you can enjoy some significant savings.

I don't know who is right or wrong, but I don't see how it is considered stealing if there is no purchase required (as in NC). I hope that Jenny will weigh in on this topic and tell us what she knows.

I haven't ever seen the hang tags, but to be honest I don't cruise down those aisles all that often. I have seen rebates in those aisles and never knew that you could submit for the rebate without buying the alcohol, and I see those every year in Food Lion in the summer grilling season. I notice it at Food Lion since the bread is on the same aisle as the beer and wine. LOL

Hey everyone.  To chime in here... peelies and wine tags are considered promotional materials put on specific products to increase sales of that product.  Is it illegal to take them, no.  You won't be put in jail.  However if you work for a grocery store and are ever caught taking them in your store on an item you didn't purchase, many stores will fire you.  In general it is considered unethical to take them if you are not purchasing the item and I would urge you not to.

On the entire idea of grabbing rebates on tearpads in states that don't require the alcohol purchase, Mary is right it's an excellent way to save!  Many of these rebates are $10 off Meat wyb (2) cases of beer, if you don't have to buy the beer then that's just $10 off meat for you!!  It can't get much better than that.

If you live in a state that does require the alcohol purchase and find rebates that are valid in NC and other states that don't require alcohol purchases, these can be great to grab and trade other couponers for coupons that you need!  They get an awesome rebate that isn't so awesome for you, and you get more coupons.

So, if I understand correctly, peelies and tags on wine bottles are basically the same type of promotion.  They are for people who are buying the product they are attached to. Tearpads are fair game as they are not specifically attched to a product. If I still have it wrong please correct me.

The way Jenny described it leads me beleive that although it is not stealing, if we are not buying the product, don't take it.

Jenny, thanks for taking the time to step in and clarify. I for one really really appreciate the coupons that are available and do not want to abuse whatever is available to me.

I've been reading the forums for a while. I never post. Because every time i have a question i feel like i will be attacked by Mary. In my opinion, Mary drove her to this point. It should not have escalated, but I think this is Mary's goal, to create drama and get people to their breaking points. She's horrible to everyone. This forum is not a safe place because of her. She's probably laughing and smiling right now.

I agree with Lillie...I don't post questions either because I fear being called "stupid"...

Thank you for the clarification Jenny, and Terri that is at least how I see it. The only type of promotion I have ever seen in the alcohol section of my store (HT) was a display with a TEARPAD 10.00 mail in rebate when you purchase 10.00 work of beef, chicken or seafood. I feel like tearpads are fair game for anyone to take (of course, try and not be rude and take the whole thing.. I took 2 one for myself, and 1 for my mom.. they only allowed 1 rebate per address anyways). Hang tags however, I feel are JUST like peelies and are intended ONLY for the person purchasing that item... while it may not be illegal, like Jenny said.. it seems unethical to take that when it was not intended for you.

Out of respect of others, I have edited my post of foul language, but still kept true to my feelings of mary.  I agree with Lillie and Tara about feeling attacked by mary and her disrespectful ways.  I don't understand why she is not removed from the forum.  She causes 99% of the drama and, like Lillie said, she probably thrives on it.  How very sad.

However, now having calmed down, I will take the higher road and with my southern grace and charm that my mama and my grandma taught me.  This southern belle will answer to mary in the southern formal way of dealing with people who are mental...mary, BLESS YOUR HEART. wink
