Are paper books dead?

Started by Carrie , author of Pocket Your Dollars 11/4/2010 7:14:08 AM

Apart from reading paper books to your kids, do you yourself read paper books or have you switched to eBooks on a Kindle, Nook or other device?

I haven't made the switch yet, but I am starting to get the itch. On the other hand, the Minnesota nice part thinks, "but if I quit reading printed material I am helping the industry die - and somehow I feel a tinge of sadness about it. (Just being honest).

Anyone else relate? Should I switch? Should I stick it out with paper books for awhile longer?

I would be so incredibly sad if paper books went away. I love, love, love the look of my bookshelf. All the different spines, every single one cracked and bent and loved, with the familiar titles staring back at me.

A digital screen with a list just doesn't do it for me. I know that the digital will take over, and that's fine with me. Maybe my leatherbound volumes will be as cheap as VHS someday :)

I don't think I'll ever switch...I just can't wrap my mind around reading a book on an electronic device.  It seems like it would be harder somehow.  I don't even like reading magazines online when you have to zoom in and out...I don't know, call me old-fashioned!  I can see how it would be handy on vacation, though.  :)

I love the smell of books and the feel of paper. I can't imagine ever giving them up entirely!

I haven't used a Kindle yet, but I can't imagine preferring anything over holding a book in my hands. Books are here to stay I say!

Never! I look books. I have a bit of a habit of writing my name and the date I started reading in each book and make my friends write their names when I let them borrow it. It's like a mini diary that I can look back on and see what I was up to a certain part of time.

I think so that sole reason I will never switch to e books.

I love this idea! I am going to have to start doing that.. What a fun way remember. I re-read books all the time so this would be good.

I am with you all. I could never give up the feel of a book. There are some books that beg to be read in Hardcover too, like The Historian. I am so glad I read this one in hardcover it fit the feel of the book.

Gina. I am with you. I love my library in my home. I am working on redoing the room. I need more shelves. I love walking in and seeing where I have been in a sense.

I read both, but I definitely still read paper books. I love them. I like to get all cozy and read along with highlighters, pens and some paper (I read non-fiction mostly)!

This is part of my fear with this type of technology. Everyone has it at their fingertips all the time! I saw two girls, sitting in a movie theater together, each reading from their own e-reader. Why even bother going out with your friends?

It's akin to the cell phones/ texting at the dinner table. Why bother being around people at all, if all you are going to do while in their company is immerse yourself in technology?

I LOVE my Sony - I love that I have a ton of books at my fingertips. I take it everywhere - I'll pull it out while I'm in line at the store even. I still have my huge collection of actual books that I probably won't ever get rid of, but, truth be told, they have mostly sat untouched in the past year. I've even downloaded digital copies of actual books I own to reread, so I guess that says something.

I am all about paper books - none of those e-Readers for me! I like the look and feel of books.

I am all about the feel & comfort of the real deal paper books. I collect them & I won't ever switch to e-readers as a replacement. Bookmarks and highlighters will always be a part of my reading experience.
