About weekend posts....

Started by Queenie , author of thePLANETpink 8/6/2010 2:13:40 PM

I'm so conflicted about posting on the weekend and more specifically what to post.  I'm still in the early stage of my blog where an absence by me of 2 days can result in a noticeable drop in views.  I hate that pressure, but hopefully as I build my readership I can afford to take time off over the weekends.

Until then... do feel that weekends views are low in general?  Do you save your "housekeeping" sort of posts for the weekends?  Or do you not pay attention and sometimes post really really good content on the weekend?

I'm just trying to decide.  Sometimes (like now) I've got a really good post ready to go, but I feel like I should hold it until the next week, to maximize the views.

Thoughts?

That's a great question, but unfortunately I don't think there's a straight-forward answer on this one. I've searched for an answer to this question recently too... I did read a problogger post on this subject (wish I could remember the exact post title for you) and he was saying that less people read during the weekends (making some choose to not put important posts on the weekends) while others choose to post on the weekends for exactly that reason - less "competition" (as in less numbers of posts in someone's reader) to vie for the readers' attention, therefore gaining a higher readership. {Ugh, how was that for a terrible run-on sentence with far to many 'reader'ish words? Did you follow?!} In saying all that though, he did say Monday morning, Tuesday morning, and Thursday afternoons seemed to be good post times. Or something like that. I know... weird huh? So maybe you should hold off on your really good post until Monday morning? (Can you write a short one or do a photo post in between?) Overall, problogger suggests tracking your blog for a while (types of posts in comparison to which days of the week you post them) and seeing what works for your specific audience. I've not gone that far yet... too much detail for me! {blech!} But let me know what you do and then pass the winning formula onto me, ok?! ;)

Weekends are low in general. At least that's what everybody says, and I have noticed it in my blog as well.

You need time off. The daily grind will literally smother you if you don't give yourself some time. And since quality will win out over quantity any day, don't pressure yourself to write everyday. (Look at Hyperbole and a Half- she posts like every 2 weeks and has 17,000 followers; quality, not quantity)

I started doing a big, fun post on Fridays. This is the post that winds up in all the link ups- which are always on the weekends- and it gives me time to rest or get stockpiled on posts for the next week.

I have noticed that weekends are low for views. Especially for our niche - mom blogs. I've found that I get the most views & comments in the evenings on week days. I try to keep that in mind, but I do post stuff that I think is good on the weekends sometimes anyway.

I think overall weekends are low traffic days, on average. But some of my few hightest traffic record-breaking days of all time were on weekend days.

I've found though that if i am on a roll posting consistently every single day that my traffic remains high through the weekend too. But that doesn't happen with a lot of regularity.... I like to take the weekends off! :)
