what makes you click "mark as read" in your RSS reader?

Started by adriel , author of the mommyhood memos 7/29/2010 12:49:35 AM

Before I scroll through my subscriptions in my reader, I always scroll through the titles and if any one blog has more than 3 posts in a day I will automatically mark them all as read and not look at them. (Unless it's already a blog I've established that I really like, then I leave them.)

I also have a folder called "spammy" where I put blogs that only do reviews and deals or 15 posts a day. I never, ever look at those - they always get marked as "read". I also have a similar folder for "partials" where I put any blogs that only give a partial feed. I hate this and will rarely ever click over to their blog to see if I want to read more.

Yes, I could unsubscribe, but I don't mind being a follower and helping them with their numbers... it just doesn't mean I'll ever become a reader. (I should note that I periodically do go through the partials to see if any of them have changed their minds and switched over to full feeds... then they can get moved out of that folder and they become potential reading material again.)

How about you? What are your biggest posting turn-offs? Do you ever mark certain blogs (or types of blogs) as "read" before looking at them?

You are WAY nicer than me. I am crazy about my Google Reader, but I'm also very selective. Unless you are a blogger I have an actual email/blogfrog/twitter conversation kind of relationship with, if you have a partial feed, I unsubscribe. I don't have the time.

I don't care if people post a lot in a day if their content is good - as long as it's not like 20 posts a day. I do this because some days - like today for instance - there were like 4 posts I needed to post & for several different reasons, today was the only day I could work it out. But I try to keep it to 1 or 2 posts a day.

And this is where I'm really cut-throat, but when I'm reading through my posts for the day - or every couple of days - I'm always thinking in the back of my mind, "Do I want to keep subscribing to this?" Although, this is really only for the people in the "Giving it a shot" folder. If you're in Moving on Up or Comment on These or Favorites, you're pretty much there to stay. I probably add anywhere from 5-10 new blogs to my reader per week & I probably unsubscribe from about 5 or more per week.

The way I see it, I just don't have the time. BUT I am really good about following the people who consistently comment on my blog. If you make an effort to make a relationship with me, then I will make an effort to have the relationship with you. I also make an effort to start new relationships, too, but if I read your blog for a while, comment, re-tweet, etc & you never reply to my comment either on your blog or through email - after a couple weeks, I stop reading your blog, too. I understand why people would do that to me. That's why I try to interact if you come to my blog.

I don't have it all figured out in my Google Reader, but I never ever read coupon/giveaway blogs.  I will follow them, but I never read them.  That's not what I want to spend my time on when I'm at the computer.  You've read my Coupon Confessions post right?  LOL

I agree. It's way too time consuming trying to keep up with everything.  I tend to overlook giveaway and review blogs.  I'm not in the market to buy anything and I hate jumping through 15 hoops just to enter a contest.

I do like it if someone makes an effort to respond to a comment of mine.  Mind you not all comments are reply worthy.  Still, taking the time to make the odd comment on my blog are nice.  I was just thinking today how I stopped reading a really funny blog because she never ever replied or visited me back.  Not once.

Question:  If you reply via the comments section do you actually go back to see if someone responded to it?  I never bothered because I figured once you comment you're done.  I can't remember some days who all I commented on.

No I don't. I think I have gone back to a comment a couple of times on a post I was very passionate about just to see if they had responded back... But this was when I first started my blog and when I discovered nothing there I haven't done it since. I've since then realized no one does that.

I do sometimes still leave reply comments to my readers on my posts, but that's to show others that I'm interested in the back-and-forth. I often reply to their comments with a quick email (with my same comment) when I do that so that they can see my comment too. (Does that make sense? Terrible sentence there...)

I guess that's why add-ins like Disqus are really good - so that you can respond in the thread and they will get it. Still on the fence about adding it though. I think it's great for the blog owner, but not convinced about the reader... I'm waiting to see how Cameron goes with her transfer. ;)

Hmmm, Cameron, I'm not sure if I'm nicer, or just less organized. At the moment I'm hating my reader because there's a thousand blogs in there (not literally, but feels like it). I've totally got it on my to-do list for this weekend to sort that reader out. It's causing me grief and stress! ;) I was organized just fine until 31DBBB, and then it just exploded all over the place and left me with a mess!!!

For anyone that's following this thread and wants a better system, check out Cameron's post on How to Efficiently Read Blogs. I'm going to be implementing more of these tips now that I understand how to even use a reader. (I can't believe I used to just read blogs from my blogger dashboard... really? It's true.) ;)

I don't go back & check normally because, like you, I forget where all I've commented! I comment a lot, so it can get crazy. That is why I've been interested in Disqus, but I'm having a hard time getting it set up which makes me less interested. That's one reason why I'm interested in Wordpress - they have a plug-in that will email the commenter when you reply to their comment. That way I can both send them an email & show the reply in my comments section all at once. But I'm not ready to switch to Wordpress yet.

And reading on the dashboard is probably easier if you don't follow a ton of blogs. I have more than 300 individual blogs on my Google Reader, so I have to organize into folders & stuff or it gets completely out of control.

There's nothing wrong with that... no need to duck and run. ;) BUT, have you tried using a reader? I hadn't tried it until after reading Cameron's post and seriously Queenie, it makes it sooooo much easier!!! I would highly recommend you give it a try. Even if you're only following a fewer number of blogs than she is, it is just so much better for reading. Check it out if you can! :) When you're signed into your dashboard, just click on the small link right under the reading window that says "view in google reader." I had always ignored that link before... but if you haven't tried it already, just try it once! You can always stay with your blogger dashboard if you don't like it. :)

I do use google reader but I wish you could comment from there.  It's time consuming to go back and forth between the blog and reader.

Unless you all know something I don't?  :)

No, I don't. I just open the posts I want to comment on in another tab in my browser as I'm going through my reader, then I comment & come back to the reader. It is a little more time consuming, but it also gives them views, too.
