Hi Candice:

Personally, I think raw is one of the healthiest ways to feed your dog, providing your dog isn't sick, elderly or suffering with a weakened immune system. Many dogs overcome skin, digestive and other issues when fed raw.  However, you have to know what you're doing, unless you're just going to buy a already prepared raw food.  My dogs eat a dehydrated food (The Honest Kitchen and Grandma Lucy's which is freeze dried) and an excellent alternative to making your own dog food or feeding raw.  These foods can be combined with raw or cooked meats for added protein. I include a can of Wellness for each dog as well.

Thanks Janie, right know I am exploring the different kinds of raw food. We got an English Massfitt and I was thinking of switching the food over.

You're welcome Candice. Explore the dehydrated and freeze dried forms too.  However, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND adding more meat such as Wellness Ninety Five Percent which is just that - 95% meat and 5% fat and water.  If you're going with commercially prepared raw, it has everything needed, but if you're putting all together yourself, you'll have to add all the necessary supplements and most IMPORTANTLY calcium.

Janie, I did not know that about the calcium and supplements. I was thinking of making it from scratch, but the time to make it is the issue. There's a Dog Health Food store in the city and I was thinking of trying it out to see about pricing.

Raw is an excellent way to feed, but you MUST know what you're doing. There's good books out there that can help. If you want to go that route, let me know and I'll tell you which books are good.  There's a few. Anytime you feed raw, calcium must be added to the diet.

If bones are added in the diet as a source of calcium then you don't need to add it as a supplement, however, you have to make sure that you're truly adding enough bone to the meal.

IMPORTANT: If you're feeding a commercial food of any kind where it's already balanced and calcium is included - NEVER add more calcium.

If you want to feed raw, look at foods such as Primal or Answers. Both are good raw foods and are already balanced. :o)

I love your website. My hubby asked me if I should be supplementing the dogs with fish oil & omega vitamins. One of his co-workers does that with his collie and my hubby thought it might help. Do you know anything about this. (another things to add to my list)

Thank you Candice. First, what are your plans with the food?  Tell me that?

Actually, tell me what the problems are with your dog if any. Let's start there ok
