Have you got pets?

Started by Sophie Uliano , author of Gorgeously Green - Your Guide to an Eco-Friendly Lifestyle 11/1/2010 9:13:03 PM

Would love to hear about how you care for your pets in an eco-friendly way. What do you feed them? Are you concerned about toxic-laden products? What's your favorite thing about your pet??

Hi Sophie,

I have 2 dogs and I try to be as green and organic with them as possible.  I used to cook organic food for my first dog but my vet was really against it.  Then I put them on Stella and Chewy's patties which they loved but my Vet didn't like that either.  Both of vets I saw were concerned about them getting salmonella since it was considered a raw dehydrated diet. Also the high protein was another concern for their livers.I put them on dog food but I think I am going to go back to cooking for them unless I can find a really fantastic food.

I purchased beds from greenerpup.com which makes beds w/ inserts made from recycled bottles. When I take them to the groomer, I bring my own organic shampoo which  paraben free, sls free that has essential oils to repel fleas and ticks.  I also give them filtered water since my water has so many chemicals in them.

Hi Sophie,

I have an adorable Bichon Frise and I try to do everything I can to "green" him :). Right now he is on a diet of chicken and rice. I also make sure to always give him filtered water...my roomates think I'm crazy that I won't let him drink tap water. I have a hard time trusting dog foods, and what they actually contain. Do you have a suggestion for a great eco-friendly dog food brand?

Both his leash and collar are made from organic cotton. He gets bathes with his organic & natural shampoo, and I have even found a groomer who uses organic & natural products! I also make sure that his poopie bags are biodegradable.

I have tried a few natural flea treatments, but the only one's that seem to work for my little Gaston are the chemical filled one's distributed by vets. Any suggestions??

Kelly,

You may want to read my blog post today on "Pampered Pooches" as I talk about dog food and my favorite ones. I think diet is everything when it comes to pets. Anyway, great to be introduced to you and your lovely dogs.

Megan - you should totally make the Anti-flea spray from my newest book, Do It Gorgeously - it's the only spray I'll use on my dogs - also follow the anti-flea program I set out.

For the cat lovers out there, I highly recommend using World's Best Cat Litter.

Here is a link to their site, and the section on how they are a much more planet-friendly option than traditional clay litters.

http://www.worldsbestcatlitter.com/our-difference/planet-friendly.php

Another earth-friendly litter out there is called "Yesterday's News," made from recycled newspaper.  The only problem with this litter is that it can be quite difficult to find and, in comparison to competing litters, it is quite pricey.

If you are feeling crafty, you can make your own!  I recently ran across this article on how to do so.

Not to be left out, there is Kitty's Crumble, which I just ran across.  I'll have to check it out and get back to ya! :)

Its actually pretty simple to make your own kitty litter from recycled paper.  Here's some instructions:  http://therealowner.com/pets/how-to-make-your-own-kitty-litter/

What are your favorite doggie toys? I love all the toys at West Paw and my puppy is crazy for one of those stuffingless soft animals. He has a duck and this thing gets totally ravaged.

Hello all, I just bought the new book. Do it Gorgeously and love it. My only problem is there is no anti-flea remedy in it for cats. I checked everything online and peppermint oil and cedarwood oil are highly toxic to cats. What should I do?

I would be really careful with cats because of liver toxicity. That said, I know a few cat owners who have had no problem using certain oils with cats, but in a very low dilution (1 drop to 25 ml of water).
