Do you go to farmers markets?

Started by Janice , author of A Colorful Adventure 12/6/2010 6:41:09 PM

I'd love to know how many of you have farmers markets that you frequent and whether you do that year-round or more seasonally. Here in Memphis we've had a few more added to the choices we have and I've enjoyed getting to the ones open all week more frequently than I could one-day only sites.

It was some of that that led me to ask a farmer I met questions about what all they do to prepare for the farmers market each week. I was blown away. Lots of work!

Janice, I actually frequented the local Farmer's Market quite a bit when I was pregnant with my boys.  Since then, my husband began working in the NYC Terminal Market which is one of the largest produce markets in the world.  As a result, I get my pick of fresh fruits and vegetables.  There really is nothing as great as eating fresh produce.

We go to farmer's markets and also buy food directly from local farmers.  Much better quality.  I also read somewhere that the farmer only receives about 19 cents per pound when you buy food at the store.  We like to get to know the people who grow our food and I like knowing that the families benefit from the entire dollar we spend.

I love our farmers market, I get alot of organic produce and I love to use Goat Milk products for my daughter. It does take a lot of work and planning to get things up and running, Nothing like it

Teresa, what does goat milk taste like?  Does your daughter like to drink it?  Are you worried about the fact that it is not pasteurized?

I used to live in White Plains, NY and loved the fact produce markets in the area could get such great fruits and vegetables year-round.

I lived in Westchester too and loved the fresh produce that always seemed abundant. We live in Maine now and there is a terrific farmer's market in Old Port (Portland). Also, there is a HUGE push to buy local here and many restaurants and markets make an effort to buy local produce, cheeses and meats. I like the idea of supporting my local farmers. They certainly work hard!
