Gardens...Gardens...

Started by Rachel , author of Homeschooling: Snapshots of Life & Learning 3/10/2011 5:13:47 PM

... how long does your survive?  Every year I put one in and every year something happens to it... the neighbor boy mowed it one year, the next year we had a dog who would chew on tomato plants (?!?) and last year my toddler decided to uproot all of my lettuce.  So, I am wondering if I am wasting my time.  We just put in a garden, the smallest so far, and I am wondering if it will last.

What do you think?  Can you keep kids and animals out of your garden?  What is your secret?

I just found wildflower mixes at Target in their dollar area!

I am sprinkling those this weekend.

I think it is worth the experience of planting with your kids. JDaniel and I got 5/$1 seeds at a drug store awhile back. We are going to plant them and see what happens.

Electric fence.  LOL

Just kidding :)  I am planning on planting this year, even though I know it will probably get ruined from my toddler and the neighbors dog.  It's just something nice and fun to do outside  :)

We always put a fence around our garden.  We try to work it into the landscape and have a gate to keep the dogs out. We have 3.  We just moved into a new house with a new yard and don't have a garden yet, so we are starting from scratch.  I'll be blogging about the whole experience.  I also found that with young children its great to start seeds with them (I've worked in daycare almost my entire adult life) so that they can tend to them and see how they sprout from a little cup of dirt.  I've also found a great little invention called an aerogarden that allows you to grow, vegetables, herbs or even flowers hydroponically.  You can keep it in the window sill.  Hope this helps.

I just plant a ton knowing half of it will not make it.  But my daughter loves to walk outside and pick sugar snap peas to snack on.  I love it!
