Teaching kids to hold pencils

Started by OneMommy , author of There's Just One Mommy... - There's Just One Mommy... 6/21/2012 10:06:41 AM

My daughter always held her crayons and pencil right, right from the start. My son?  Not so much.  He grips it in his fist still.  Every attempt I've made to show him how to do it hasn't worked.

Any tips?

Have you tried the tingle crayola crayons? Those help. Also go to a teacher store they have grip things you can put on pencils and pens. (About 50 cents to a dollar here in Canada) I have an improper hand grip and that is what I use.. They say if I had those from a young age my hand grip might be more develop. Hope that helps

I forgot about triangle crayons!  We had some for his big sister when she was little.  Thanks for the reminder!

In my opinion (totally just my opinion) he is still so young for it to me the major focus. Sometimes more hand/wrist strength is needed before the proper grip can be comfortable enough/easy enough to use. I would have him do more fine motor skill work and strengthen those muscles - playdough is a HUGE help, using tweezers, paper punchers, spray bottles, lacing beads on pipe cleaners etc.  Also, give him as many opportunities to write and draw and color as you can so that he continues to love it. =)

 Thank you.

Sometimes it is so easy to compare our kids.  I just remember his sister holding her stuff right from the start it seems....  I definitely want to keep it so it stays fun - you're right.  And I know some fine motor skill is probably needed here now that you mention it...  Thanks for some great ideas!

Triangle pencil grips that slide onto a pencil can help too.

I remember those from when I was younger!

Have you tried putting paper clips on the pencil? This is the paper clip I'm talking about: http://www.google.com.ph/imgres?hl=en&safe=active&sa=X&biw=1092&bih=514&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=DLzXXkksX7DMfM:&imgrefurl=http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/563534-do-we-need-start-shipping-out-midol-2.html&docid=CykwNslsOoDJ8M&imgurl=http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads18/clip11284138812.jpg&w=425&h=333&ei=-l79T-zaNI3KmAXY-byPBQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=802&vpy=206&dur=2429&hovh=199&hovw=254&tx=134&ty=102&sig=106637402677825378033&page=2&tbnh=144&tbnw=193&start=10&ndsp=16&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:10,i:116

Put it on the pencil, then have your kid place his index finger between the silver "ears"

Hope this helps

My son is 7 and he used to be able to hold the pencil correctly and actually used chopsticks at 15 months. These days, however, he grips the pencil awkwardly like a fist but his penmanship is remarkably neat.

Should we try grips? He says it feels more comfortable. Is it a big deal if the result is neat pensmanship?
