The garden that provides.

Started by Debbie 7/6/2011 6:41:35 PM

With a very late spring that jumped straight to a hot summer it has been a very slow start to harvest here in the mountains. However, I was so happy to cut some cilantro yesterday and added it to a salad today, yum. There are lots of flowers on the squash and green beans with hopes for the tomatoes to take a jump in growth soon.

So how is your winter garden plan coming along? So many blogs are showing wonderful veggies and even some canning happening right on time. I can hardly wait to get started.

I have my winter seeds. I just need to order some row cover material so I'm ready when cool weather arrives. I'm hoping that my fall/winter garden is better than my summer garden. I've been very discouraged this year. My cilantro is just barely sprouting! Zero peas, only 5 cucumber plants, and some variaties of lettuce didn't work at all. On the other hand, some lettuce did great, I have a few radishes about ready and I plan to plant some more tomorrow, the eggplant is finally looking good (love that Diamond variety) and the arugula did okay.

Tomatoes are only fair and only half of my 15# of potato eyes came up. Not sure why except that the eyes were not looking too good when I planted them. I'm going to have to maybe select some really short season/cool weather variaties next year.
