Do You Pick Wild Berries?

Started by Annie , author of Country Living In a Cariboo Valley 4/20/2011 10:49:02 PM

Hi, I am pretty new here, I have read through some of the posts.

Does anyone here go and pick wild berries? Where we live, there are a lot of Saskatoon berries. They taste better cooked than raw (at least to me). But our forests are full of them and we pick as many as we can each year.

What kind of wild berries grow near you? Free food, gotta love it.

There's nothing better than free food- I agree! We have lots of wild Blackberries and plenty of Huckleberries as well. We also have Salmonberries and Thimbleberries. I would love to find wild strawberries but I'm not sure that they grow in our part of the country.

Youve got lots of choices for berries, Heather, that's great! We do have wild strawberries here, they are very very tiny.

I'm hoping we all have a good berry year, it's kind of hard to tell at this point how many we'll have. I'll pick as many as I can.

What do you do with yours? Do you make jam?

We don't really have any wild berries here. We had some in NYC and my husband didn't think we should eat the wild berries growing in walmart parking lot.......didn't think they were safe....UHG! lol

That being said, now we live in the country, but we live in Kansas......kind of flat and not much wild grows! lol haha But, we do have a lot of "wild" dandelions! lol I made dandelion pancakes this morning for my girls and they loved them. We will probably make dandelion jelly soon. We made fried dandelion greens last week. lol

My dad did plant a TON of mulberries and they should be about ready to pick soon. He also planted pears and apples. I am looking forward to making butters with them! And I planted strawberries this year, and tons of stuff in my garden. I can't wait to get to eat the fruits (and veggies!) of my labor!

LOL Heather- I maybe with your husband on the berries at Wal-Mart! ;)

Annie, I do all kinds of things with them. Of course, jam is always a favorite. I freeze them for smoothies and kefir. I make pies. Then of course, we just eat them fresh!

I thought about you and this post yesterday when I went out to our chicken coop. In the chicken run we have a small volunteer Elderberry tree that, for the first time this spring, has the start of berries on it! I can't wait! :)

We have about 30 acres of our property where wild blackberries grow. Each year, I go out and pick as many as I can, and sell what I don't use. I make a couple of batches of jelly, and save some for pies or other goodies. Last year, I sold approx. 15 one gal bags of wild blackberries, made 3 batches of jelly, and still have a bag in the freezer!

Now, if I could just figure out how to get rid of the honeysuckle that seems to take over some of my bigger patches, I would be really happy!

I pick wild currants every year.  My grandma used to make jelly with them.  I prefer to make syrup or juice.

lol well, I didn't think the mulberries would be that bad, he was afraid they would be polluted though. lol He also wouldn't eat the wild onions I picked in the park next to our co-op's apartment building! haha

I just love honey suckle I grew up with it, but don't have any here where I live I wish I did. Have you ever made honey suckle jelly? I'm wondering with violet jelly, dandelion jelly and all, what honey suckle jelly would taste like? I bet it would be good, I used to love to eat our honey suckle!

I'm envious of all the different kinds of fruit you and your family grows!

I did order two apple trees last week - they are the kind where there are 4 different kinds of fruit on the one tree. I was assured it would grow here, I am looking forward to getting them.

Ah, smoothies, I love those! We don't use that much jam here, most of our fruit gets used for pies and crumbles...and wine too :)

Michelle,. I love blackerries. We had lots of them wild on the Coast when we lived there, I miss them! It's a trade off...where we are now there are lots of Saskatoon berries, which don't grow on the Coast. I'm glad you have found a market for your berries
