Summer Reading

Started by Chris , author of book-a-rama 5/1/2010 7:54:16 PM
I know summer is still a few months away but Entertainment Weekly published their 18 Books We Can't Wait to Read This Summer. I received The Passage for review. It's supposed to be THE book of the summer. It's about a virus that zombifies people. Stephen King raved about it. It's a honking big book though.

Anything on that list appeal to you? What do you read in the summer?

I read Bree Tanner, and I'm not sure it's worth the hype. Obviously, very short, but really it gave us very little new story line. I think that one was meant for super-fans only. I liked it (super fan!) but I am surprised it made this list.

I am super excited about Mockingjay, nothing beat a post-apocalyptic revolt! And I keep meaning to start the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and now it looks like I'm even one more book behind in that series...

I'm looking forward to Mockingjay too, but I still need to read Catching Fire. I was a late Hunger Games fan.

This weekend I started The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and it is just spectacular.  Wow, what a read.  When I'm not reading it, I'm actually thinking about it - which is my idea of a really good book :-)

I have not actually heard of that book. What is it about?

Well, it's about a Chinese American boy who befriends a Japanese American girl during the war - when the Japanese were thought to be spies and were being sent to interrment camps.  His dad vehemently protests the friendship - he hates the Japanese.  It's a coming of age story as well as historical fiction.

Anyhow, the story is set in the 80s when the boy is grown (with flashbacks every other chapter), and an old Japanese hotel is unboarded for restoration.  They find a bunch of personal items that were hidden when the Japanese were sent away, and the boy (now a man) decides to look through the items to try to find the belongings of his old friend.

I've read 39 books so far this year, and this book trumps all of them.
