teacher rip up his work in front of the class because his
handwriting wasn't good and since then he's convinced he can't
write at all. I'm working on getting him past that but I'd love
some tips for getting kids excited about writing.
We're working on writing to several pen pals, have several fun
writing prompts, and try and incorporate writing into our day. It
seems to be the actual act of writing that he hates. He's much
better if I let him type his work on the computer.
How do you help your kids learn to love writing?

school was going to be such an ordeal but it has been an enormous
challenge. Beyond all the standard worries of bullying and general
school safety, I have kids who work above grade level and one who
has special needs and heath issues.
We keep going back and forth between homeschooling and public
school because I've been trying to figure out what works for my
kids but I don't want to keep changing things up on them.
How did you determine what was the best way to educate your
kids?

Thanksgiving is sneaking up on us. I don't know about you, but this whole year has flown by for me. One of my favorite things about the holidays is having my kids do holiday themed crafts.

What are your favorite Thanksgiving crafts and activities to do with your kids?

With three kids and a husband, I'm massively outnumbered in our house, which mean that I can not clean faster than they can mess up. There's just no way. I can either play the martyr and spend my days cleaning and nagging, or I can teach my kids to help keep the house clean (and avoid all of that extra frustration and resentment).

The problem is, teaching kids how to clean can often be harder and more time consuming than simply doing it yourself. I keep reminding myself that one day they actually will be able to clean on their own, without me micromanaging every little detail, but that's only going to happen if I take the time to teach them now, while they are young.

So how do you get kids to help clean?

I consider myself a fairly frugal and financially responsible person, but getting here has required a steep learning curve. Now I'm working to teach my children how to be financially successful while they are young so they don't have to take quite as long to figure things out as I did.

Know what you are spending. You can't cut back on your spending if you don't know what your outgo is to start with. Tracking your spending can be a daunting task for most of us. Create a plan to track your spending in detail for one month so you have a better idea of what you need to budget. Be sure and take into account seasonal bills like Christmas spending and auto registration renewal.

Never pay late fees. Late fees can add up very quickly. No one wants to waste money on fees. Keep track of when your payments are due so you can be sure and make all your payments on time. If you are having trouble keeping track of everything, try an online system like Manilla to alert you when you have a bill due. If you do end up with a late fee, most companies will be willing to refund one fee a year if you give them a call and let them know what the problem is.

Know the difference between needs and wants. It's easy to convince yourself that you need that brand new car or you need some new shoes but buying too many extras can clutter up your house and ruin your budget. Get into the habit of asking yourself whether you really need something before making a purchase. More often than not, you'll probably discover that the purchase isn't necessary.

Take advantages of sales. Living a more frugal lifestyle does not mean that you need to give up everything you love. If you keep an eye out for sales, free events, and promotional offers you can actually enjoy more than you did when your spending was higher. In my family, we are avid coupon users. I set my kids to work cutting coupons for me. They love being involved and it's great for their small motor skills.

Don't skimp on insurance. It's tempting to save a bit of money by going with a cheaper car insurance policy or going without medical insurance but by doing that, you're running a huge risk. A medical emergency has the potential to bankrupt you if you don't have adequate insurance so don't skimp on a good policy. If you can't get great medical insurance through your employer, look into a private policy.

Cut out the extras. We've worked hard to scale back our monthly bills. We don't watch much T.V. so we cut out our cable service and opted for Netflix instead. We limit the meals we eat out each month and try and use coupons when we do. If you take an honest look at your monthly expenses, you can probably find at least a few that you really don't need and probably won't miss.

Take time to educate yourself about finances. If you had told me 10 years ago to read a financial book I would have laughed at you. Over the years I've realized that I needed more information than I had to succeed so I've taken the time to educate myself. Some of my favorite financial experts are Suze Orman and Dave Ramsey and their books are a surprisingly easy read.

What tips can you share from your own financial successes and failures? Manilla wants to know and is giving away a Spa Day worth $500 to one lucky person that tries their household account management site this month! Get control of your finances and relax knowing all your bills and statements are organized in one secure online place! It's simpler and free!

I never considered myself a business person. Most of my career has been focused on the education field. Sometimes our lives take interesting turns though and we find ourselves on a path that we didn't originally plan on taking.

Despite the fact that I didn't originally plan on working in the business world, I've been fascinated by it, and one of the things I love most is working with the smaller local businesses and helping them to succeed in a world that is constantly changing. I try and personally support local businesses whenever I can, which has the added benefit of helping me discover a few gems that would have ordinarily remained hidden.

Local businesses have a tough time, especially in this economy, and I know many of our readers are small business owners (whether they run an online business or do business in their local community).

Intuit is helping small businesses of all shapes and sizes achieve their dreams by awarding $25,000 each month to a local business!

You can nominate your own favorite local business (or your own business) and help them succeed. Votes are like raffle tickets so the more votes a business has the more chances they have to win so don't forget to vote for the business you love once they've been nominated. I was actually amazed at how many of my favorite local businesses had already been nominated - including one of our favorite community theatre groups.

My own business has been filled with ups and downs but it's given me a wonderful way to stay home with my children while doing something I love.

I always love hearing about moms who are able to turn their passions into a career, so I’m curious to know: What dream business would you love to start?

By replying you will be entered to win an iPad 2!

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Intuit’s Love A Local Business competition. The opinions and text are all mine. Contest runs July 6 to August 9, 2011. A random winner will be announced by August 11, 2011. Official Contest Rules

For most moms trying to juggle parenthood, work responsibilities, household maintenance, and all the other crazy demands on our time, organizing your finances is probably about as appealing as ripping your toenails out one at a time. The good news is there are tools available to simplify the process and once your finances are under control, everything else in your life usually feels just a little bit easier.

The bad news? Many of the tools designed to make your life easier can actually complicate things. Paperless billing? How many of you have had bills show up in your junk folder and end up having to pay late fees on payments you didn't realize were due. Online banking? Great in theory but if you are like many families out there you have accounts at multiple banks and have to log into several sites to get a good look at all your finances.

Last month I got a sneak peek into Manilla, a new household account organization site, and I've been excited about the potential this has to simplify my financial organization. Manilla is designed as a one stop shop for all your financial needs. It puts all your accounts in one place (right down to your magazine subscriptions) and even provides free lifetime storage of all your account statements and bills!

I love paying my bills online but it is a bit overwhelming to remember different usernames and passwords for every account that I have. Manilla puts everything in one place, which means only one password for you. You can manage and pay your bills directly from Manilla.

Manilla is completely free to the consumer. They earn money by charging each provider a small fee that comes out of what they are saving on stamps and printing paper bills. What does that mean to you? No pushy ads trying to get you to sign up for offers every time you log in. The site has a nice clean look so you can get in, pay your bills, and get back to your life.

One of the first things I want to know before I hand over my financial information is how secure is it? Fortunately, the Manilla team has some great credibility. Started by the Hearst Corporation, Manilla is run by CEO George Kliavkoff and has relationships with some of the top financial institutions including, American Express, Capital One, Chase, and more.

Plus, in June they are doing an amazing Giveaway: one lucky new user will win $1,000 cash to pay their bills!

With so many awesome "educational" (or so I tell myself) games available on the computer and in the form of phone apps, how do you monitor access to it all for your kids?

Although it may not be entirely true, I find that I tell myself that these options are "better" than a video when I need to get stuff done, but the habit is creating little tech monsters in our home!

I was excited to recently discover Zoodles.com as a way of limiting the time, violence, and control content for my kids. It's free, and has been a lifesaver... like a way of kid-proofing my computers, phones, and tablet!

We started our summer vacation with a move so we're still recovering from that, but I'm hoping to banish TV and video games for most of the summer.

So far, my kids have discovered that they love board games. Monopoly had a long run with my kids but it's been replaced by Clue and Battleship.

We went out and bought new bike helmets tonight hoping that the kids will spend more time outside and hopefully we can increase our fitness level as a family.

What are your plans to keep your kids entertained this summer?

Last month Kenmore asked for my biggest household challenge and in our house, our biggest challenge is definitely finding the time to get dinner on the table. Between our busy schedule, my life trying to balance parenting, managing the home, and being a work at home mom life is hectic.

This month, I'm sharing my Genius Tip on how I overcame that challenge and saved dinnertime at our house!

Kenmore is on the search for everyday genius & each month they are giving away $3,000 in Kenmore gift certificates and a chance to have the best Genius Tip turned into an Ad! Enter your Genius Tip Today!

So how did I do it?

I delegated! I put dinnertime in my kids (apparently very capable) hands. I know. You think I'm crazy. My kids may be only 7, 5, and 3 but they can really be a HUGE help when I let them be.

Now I'm a big fan of letting kids actually help cook dinner - but that honestly isn't a huge time saver for me with the ages my kids are right now. I have to save all the "helping" for when I have a bit more time on my hands.

What does save me time, is having my kids help choose what I'm cooking for dinner each night. I get stuck in such a dinner rut trying to come up with meal ideas every single night of the week and I end up wasting so much time meal planning.

I pulled out a stack of cookbooks and set my kids loose. They each picked 1-2 meals they wanted to try out of the cookbooks I had and my oldest wrote down the ingredients I needed to buy to make the meals (which was fantastic writing practice and he didn't even know it).

The result? My kids were thrilled to death to try some new recipes because they had helped pick them out and I didn't have to spend the time to plan my menu for the week.

My mom is British so I probably can't admit that I didn't stay up to watch the royal wedding. Most of my family stayed up late and had tea parties but I just can't function without sleep. I have been watching some of the recaps online today though and I want to know what you think?

I wasn't overly impressed with the dress. It was pretty but not as elaborate as I'd expect in the royal wedding and was it just me or was Catherine making weird faces during the ceremony?

When it comes to putting dinner on the table, there are always going to be challenges. In our family, our biggest struggle is keeping meals exciting. My kids are nearly fearless eaters but for some reason they just won't eat anything twice. Forget leftovers! If I cook something while they still remember eating it the previous time I'm sure to get all kinds of complaints.

While I like variety in my dinner as much as the next person, at the end of the day when I'm tired and burned out, the last thing I want to do is be creative in the kitchen.

Stay tuned next month to read my Genius Tip on how I beat this challenge!

The American Academy of Pediatrics issued new car seat guidelines last week. The new recommendations are that infants remain rear facing until their 2nd birthday or until they hit the maximum height and weight for their car seat – which could extend well beyond the second birthday. The new recommendations also say that children should remain in a booster seat until they are at least 4 feet 9 inches tall, which usually happens somewhere between 8 and 12 years of age.

My son is almost 8 and most of his friends no longer ride in a booster seat. Until recently, my son was still in a 5 point harness so we don't have any plans to move him out of a booster seat anytime soon. I've had several car seat safety techs check him out and tell me that he would not be safe riding in a seat belt alone. Unfortunately, my kids were recently in a rollover car accident and I'm so glad that my kids were all in car seats. We've received many comments from parents who think we are being over protective or believe that older kids should not have to ride in a booster seat because it isn't cool anymore.

I'm thrilled that the AAP has updated their car seat safety guidelines. What do you think of the new recommendations?

Join us on Monday, March 28, 2011 for a #MomStorm Twitter party to talk about the new car seat safety recommendations with Sunshine Kids! RSVP to win great prizes.

I'm starting to realize that my kids don't really understand that they need to help take care of our home and I'm having visions of how bad the teenage years are going to be if I don't nip that in the bud right now.

I'm ready to make some changes to improve my health and increase my energy (and honestly if one more person asks me when my baby is due I'm going to start begging plastic surgeons to have pity on me). I realize that one of the best places to start is to increase the amount of water I'm drinking. I used to be really good about this but as life got busier I've kind of gotten out of the habit. I generally drink more when I'm using a straw so I'm going to try and do more of that.

Today the article we did on the Nissan LEAF was picked up by Engadget, Auto Blog Green, and Treehugger. While the traffic was exciting, some of the comments people were making on YouTube and the other sites shocked me. I’m amazed at the number of people commenting and telling me to take my 7 year old out of a car seat. I spoke with a car seat safety expert who told me that she rarely sees kids under 10 who are safe riding without a booster so my son will be in at least a booster until he hits a safe weight and size.

As my kids are getting older I’m trying to be better about developing our own family traditions. I had a counselor that I worked with at my old job tell me that one of the best things you can do for kids is decorate for the holidays because it helps them understand the passage of time and teaches them to have a passion for life.

We’re getting ready to pull out our holiday decorations so I’m starting to think about what traditions we want to start as a family. What are your favorite holiday traditions?

I didn’t go out shopping on Black Friday but my husband goes every year. We got some pretty good deals on toys at Target and I got some deals on Amazon. We weren’t looking for any real high ticket items but we saved a pretty good amount on the things we were looking for.

What was your best deal on Black Friday?

I used to be so good about doing holiday activities with my kids but as life gets busier, that seems to be the first thing to go. Kids really remember the time that you spend with them, especially during the holidays, so I’m trying to set aside time to do some fun holiday crafts and activities with them.

Christmas shopping can easily kill your family budget if you don’t have a plan in place. I try and start shopping early so I can take advantages of deals as I find them. That also takes away some of the stress of trying to pay for everything at once.

How do you budget for holiday gifts and what tricks do you have to make your holiday purchases a bit more gentle on your budget?

It really depends on what you want to eat for Thanksgiving but it can cost a lot extra at the grocery.

	Here's what I do.....

I plan a small meal for my house. I buy my turkey on sale. I got my turkey yesterday for $0.49 cents a pound. The store I bought it at had a deal that you had to buy $20 worth of groceries to get that price. I found several things on sale at that store that I needed and would use to make that deal work. They had ground chuck on sale for $1.59 a pound and I was buyingt hat anyways for the month. I ended up getting a 13 pound turkey for $6. I also like to plan a few sides that everyone likes. We have mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, dressing, and a broccoli casserole. I found alot of items to make those things on sale aready. We also have cranberry sauce and rolls that I make homemade. I also only make one dessert and it uses things I have in my pantry already. My kids are quite happy with this meal. We also have enough for leftovers with this meal. I will go back and get another turkey on sale to have in my freezer for another meal later that will help woth my grocery bill later.

Getting things on sale and making leftovers for the meal makes it more affordable for me.

So, what do you do to make thanksgiving fit into your grocery budget?

So, what is everyone's plans for the Halloween weekend? Do you have family traditions for Halloween?

My kids don’t have too much of a sweet tooth (me, on the other hand, that’s a different story) but they definitely eat more candy than they usually do on Halloween. I’ve heard parents who trade their kids’ candy for a toy, limit candy to a certain number of pieces a day, or just make it a free for all.
