Can Onesies and Cloth Diapers Co-exist?

Started by Steph 12/14/2010 1:10:37 PM

Now that winter is in full swing (it's single digit highs today), I'm back to putting my daughter in onesies. Does anyone else have problems with urine wicking onto the onesie when in a cloth diaper? We use Smartipants, and haven't had any issues with leaks...until we started using onesies again. Any suggestions?

I am not familiar with the smartipants line but I assume it is a diaper cover... do you use prefolds on her bottom first, and then cover it with the smartipants, or are these the types with the pocket for a liner?

They are in AIO pocket diaper--very easy to use!

Can you try a onsie that's a little bigger? I never had this problem with the BumGenius and our cloth diapers. Or maybe try putting an extra soaker in the  diaper?

I always had prefolds with a cover and never had an issue with leakage (other than the occasional normal blow out)

I had a few pocket diapers, and in them I used extra inserts when we were out of the house since it never seemed to be effective without doubling up...

As long as the onsie isn't too tight, it should be fine. We used AIOs and pockets and only had issues when Peanut was about to go up a clothes size.

Oh, and for the record, somewhere around 20/21ish months, my son became a super heavy wetter and even with a disposable on under his cloth diaper, some mornings he'll have leaked through. I think the only thing that will solve this problem is potty training. Though, he's showing no signs of being interested in that. . .

It doesn't just leak during naps though--it will wick moisture within 30 minutes or so. I guess I'll just have to use a bigger onesie so it's not snug up against the diaper : /

Super frustrating!  Waterproof mattress pads and even more extra laundry!

I think it is also important to note that every kids is different, and goes through lots of different body-function phases too... so what works for one doesn't always do the job for another.  I know how many things people SWORE I needed to get that never worked for us, and other things they said don't bother with that made me really happy.

Wow... that does sound harsh!

My sister was 3 and showed no interest in getting potty trained.  Then the neighbor girl was going to go to preschool and my sis wanted to go with her.  My mom told her they don't allow kids with diapers in there.  Boom!  That's all it took.  She was instantly potty trained.

Lisa, if you want to be inhumane about it, I was forced to do a three day potty-training boot camp once. It was awful, sad, degrading and just... no!

The only bit of parenting advice I've gotten (from a friend who is studying to be a pediatric cardiologist) was to not force potty training. He seemed to think that was just emotional trauma waiting to happen and that it isn't worth it.
