Do Teething Tablets Work?

Started by Steph 12/14/2010 1:02:59 PM

My 9 month old daughter still hasn't cut any teeth, but I think the first two are about to pop through. She's miserable! Drooling like crazy, chewing on everything in sight, and cranky. I bought some of the Humphrey's teething tablets, but wondered if anyone else could tell me if they'll actually work. It says to dissolve them in 1/2 tsp of water and then rub on the gums--she didn't appreciate that!

The Hylands worked wonderfully... but sadly they were recalled, since homeopathic remedies are not regulated by the FDA, they forced them to recall them.

If yours has belladonna, it was probably recalled as well.

I hadn't heard anything about a recall! These are Humphrey's Teething Relief Pellets, and they do contain belladonna, as well as chamomile, coffee cruda, and calcarea phosphorica. I just bought them today, the Walgreens pharmacist recommended them...

The FDA called for a voluntary recall of the tablets due to their homeopathic (thus untested/unproven) nature, and the ability of parents to misuse them (give too much.)

I do not feel like they are at all harmful if used properly and sparingly, but belladonna in large quantities is toxic (like MOST things.)

I won't go as far as to tell you to use them, but I can say that my daughter teethed hard and fast, and they saved my sanity on some days.

I think there are still Hylands on the shelves, though. I recently saw them at a local pharmacy. The thing I didn't like about the Humphries is that they have sugar in them, which always concerned me about developing teeth.

When things got really bad, I'd do a little coctail: teething tablets, motrin, and occasionally a little shot of Orajel. (But I HATE orajel!) But other than that, the Hylands tablets worked well for us.

yes, since the FDA can't really force them (they have no proof they are harmful either) I don't think they can completely bully them into recall.  I did prefer Hylands also, for the sugar reason.

There were no Hyland's on the shelf anymore, they said they stopped carrying them. And the cold washcloth did help a LOT with my other girls. Thanks!

Man! The FDA gets in on all the good stuff! First squirrel poop, now the good teething tabs?!? :p

Hylands worked on my kids too, hadn't heard about the recall.  My boys lived and don't seem to be too messed up! ;)

too much Baby Oragel can make the tongue numb, and affects their eating a breathing...but again...WHEN MISUSED.

Sometimes (most of the time) the recalls on children's meds are simply because too many adults grossly misused or over used them with a child causing harm.
