Does Anyone Know Why Octomom Did IVF?

Started by S.I.F. , author of Single Infertile Female: Now What? 9/29/2010 10:48:22 AM

Mx3 got me thinking about this last night. There are far cheaper/less involved ways to get pregnant as a single woman other than IVF if you're healthy. You can even wind up with multiples should you so desire (Kate of John and Kate used fertility meds and overstimulated as far as I know - that could totally happen with IUI though, which is about 1/15th the cost of IVF and much easier to go through!)

So does anyone know WHY Octomom pursued IVF? I've done a little googling, but can't find anything... what was the deal there? Was there something wrong with her? Did she have fertility issues?

And if she didn't, why on earth would a healthy woman pursue the more expensive and time consuming method of IVF to get pregnant?

You know... I've never actually heard a reason.... I hadn't even thought about it... I was just too astounded by everything after she got pregnant and started having the publicity....

I know Jenny! It was the same for me!

But now that I'm thinking about it, I really do want to know why she went IVF rather than IUI? I mean, did she at one point face the fear of never conceiving? Is that what drove her to this craziness? What exactly happened there?

Excellent questions that I'd love to know the answers to also!

Another thing I'd love to know the answer to (and may have heard about and just don't remember).... how were her older kids conceived?

From what I understand, all 14 were concieved by IVF - One egg retrieval. This last round involved all frozen embryos from the past round actually.

My understanding from what I have heard is that there was NOTHING wrong with her in the fertility department. I guess she was one of those who couldnt get a guy to get her pregnant so ended up doing the whole frozen embryo route. Then she didnt want the last of her embryos to go to waste or to anyone else so she opted to have them all implanted. Now she is the proud single welfare mother of 14 children with several with special needs.

I still have a lot of anger at her and a lot more anger at her doctors that let her do this. And seriously who exactly paid for her treatments and pregnancies? To my knowledge she hasnt been employed for a while now so was it the tax payers who paid for it all? How ethical is that to do this with a woman who has evident mental issues as well as a woman who OBVIOUSLY has no means of properly taking care of this many children?

You know, I think she DID have infertility issues!  I will have to do some research, but I'm almost 100% positive she did.

My question is why she needed/wanted to go this second round when she already had 6 kids in the first place...

For most single women 6 kids is PLENTY!

Shoot. I'm married and that's too many!!!
