Daylight Savings Time

Started by S.I.F. , author of Single Infertile Female: Now What? 3/13/2010 2:26:40 PM

Big heads up: Tonight/tomorrow morning is daylight savings time!

I'm from Arizona, where the whole changing of the clocks thing doesn't happen. I honestly think it is one of the craziest concepts I have ever heard of, and even though I have lived in states that do it for almost 5 years now; I still can't get used to it.

What is the purpose; both when it was created and now?

Would you vote to end it?

I LOATH daylight savings. YUCK... fall is not bad cause I gain a hour but spring YUCK

Both daylight savings days have a positive and a negative..

Fall- extra hour of sleep..wohoo!! But, the sun sets earlier now..boo!

Spring- you lose an hour of sleep..awful! But, the sun sets later..yay!

Ugh...not looking forward to is as I have to work tomorrow. Nothing like getting up an hour earlier. The last few years I have lucked out and it was my weekend off so it didn't bother me.

I love when we Fall behind though, just for the extra hour of sleep.

Yay, time for the history buff to step in!

Ben Franklin was a huge supporter.

It became a reality as railroads became more and more popular.  It helped with scheduling.

So then Sonja, does that mean it is pretty much pointless now?

I love daylight savings..!
In summer when the days are so much longer, it gives me all that extra daylight at the end of the day that I can be outside doing things.  That hour of daylight would otherwise be wasted in the wee small hours of the morning.
With daylight savings, it gets light here from about 5am, and doesn't get dark until almost 9pm.  The days are just starting to draw in a little now.
Without daylight savings, it would be getting light at 4am - and there is nooooo way I'm getting up that early unless I absolutely have to.  That'd just be wasted daylight!!!
It actually also has a more practical modern-day benefit as well - it also saves energy!  All those lights that don't need to be turned on until an hour later in the evening!  Might seem like a little thing, but across millions of people......

My husband is looking forward to it, since J gets up with the sun... I like it b/c it is a sign of Spring.

I think it's silly but oh well.

When I was growing up we lived about 20 miles from Indiana--and a part that didn't do DST.  So we'd go down for dinner or shopping and never have to wait.  When we were there at 5, it was still 4 their time.  Then, the stores were open longer.  So that was a bonus.

I hate losing that hour of sleep! It'll take two weeks not to feel like I need a nap everyday.

I think it's a big deal for kids who are waiting on school buses though.  They don't have to do it in the dark.

Sif - from the rants my ex would go into about it.... yes it is pretty much pointless now..... I think there may still be a reason, but there's not a super one beyond "We've done it this long for x amount of reasons"... admittedly I haven't done a lot of research on all of it... but that's the general consensus I've heard from people who have studied it.
