Thinkin' about getting pregnant?

Started by Mama M. , author of My Little Life 3/9/2010 11:29:04 AM
Hey ladies!

Okay...so, I know that this "crowd" seems to include a bunch of wonderful women that haven't gotten pregnant yet...

I wrote a post today, about a L&D nurse pet peeve...women who request inductions preterm because they're uncomfortable!

What do you think about that?

Honestly...it blows my mind. Drives me a little batty. Makes me wanna scream.

I hope that they feel so comfortable as they are looking at their newborn in an incubator.

Oh Mama M this is something that really ticks me off LOL....I dont even like it when the doctors continuously push induction. I realize that there are times when it is needed but honestly the body of a woman knows what to do most of the time, hurrying things up is just harder on the mother and the child.

As for women wanting to be induced because they are uncomfortable it ticks me off because being pregnant isnt supposed to be comfortable...you have to do it and deal with it. Heck I would have loved my daughter to come early because of my lack of comfort...at about 7 months she got my sciatic nerve and half the time I couldnt even walk.....she refused early and was in fact 5 days late and perfectly healthy LOL

HUGE pet peeve of mine as well! My sister was boastfully telling me that her doc doesn't think she'll make it till her due date because her baby is measuring a week ahead and she's only 23 weeks! I understand being uncomfortable, but why force something? I have had 2 "big" babies one 8lbs6oz and 21 in and another at 21 3/4 in and 8lbs15oz. The tech said she thought my baby was already 10 lbs at 38 weeks, and if I waited he might be too big to push out. Guess what? I had him at 41 weeks 6 days and pushed him out just fine. Oh, and he was nowhere close to 10 lbs!

I have a friend that was induced at 38 weeks because she was tried of being pregnant. Her baby ended up in respiratory distress and had to be air lifted to a higher level hospital 2 hours from her home. She left the hosp with no baby and was finally able to come home less than 2 weeks later. Maybe that would have happened anyway, but statistics show that early babies (even by 2 weeks) are more likely to have problems at birth.

I asked to be induced 6 days before my due date...I had 3 children at home...I could not walk because my hips felt as if the bones were rubbing together...every step I took sent shooting pain through my back, my legs and my butt...He was down low and it felt as though he was pushing the innards of my coochie right out...I also tore a stomach muscle so laying down was piercing pains...I was also incredibly nervous that when I went into labor I would not make it there...baby 2 came in triage with no doctor there baby 3  came within 2 hrs of 1st MILD contraction and 15 m of my water breaking...even my OBGYN felt comfortable with it (he does not believe in inducing early) and when Nathan was born a week early he was 9lbs. I definitely do NOT agree with inducing early just to be done with it, but I think there are certain circumstances which warrant it.

Loved your post!! I am not a mama yet but most of my friends are and you wouldn't believe how many of them were induced early!! One of my best friends drove me absolutely insane everytime she complained about being pregnant! From the beginning (btw planned baby) she was nauseous and had to tell me everytime she threw up! Then at the end she was so uncomfortable and couldn't sleep and how she was just SOOO ready to have the baby... Yes I understand she was uncomfortable but to hear the complaining was so annoying especially considering it was a planned baby and my brother and sister-in-law are infertile and all my sister-in-law wanted was to be pregnant and then my friend complained about how miserable she was! The baby was induced 3 weeks early! I do have a question for you though Mama M... I am a type 1 diabetic and are diabetics able to go through natural labor b/c everyone I know had to have a c-section

I was induced a week after my due date with my first child.  He weighed 9'6 and I actually broke my tail bone having him.  No one told me this was even a possibility.  I'd like to have gone a little early with him.  But, still the induction was terrible.  I've had three kids and it was by far my most uncomfortable labor.

I was induced a week early with my third child because of some issues with gestational diabetes.  Easy labor, but, I was already almost there anyway.

Inductions are so routine that I don't think new moms really understand the dangers.  They are just ready to have the baby.  All their friends are being induced.  It's a shame it's so commonplace that no one thinks there's a danger of complications.

Andrea there are absolutely situations that warrant inducing early. You sound like your pregnancies/deliveries were like my SIL's. She had her first in less then 8 hours from the onset of labor. #2 almost had no doctor because the doctor was working on her discharge papers because she wasnt progressing, the nurse came in to do a final check before releasing her and found the baby crowning. She was two weeks early according to her due date. Then #3 was born in the 15 minute drive to the hospital in the car. He was a little over a week early. She ended up getting her tubes tied but the doctor told her that if she were to get pregnant a forth time they would have to admit her to the hospital a minimum of 2 weeks prior to her due date.

I totally think there are reasons for it, but when people do it just because they want to suit their own schedules or needs it drives me batty. I had a friend who wanted a scheduled c-section solely because she didn't want to go through the pain of labor. I just don't know why any doctor would agree to that reasoning at all though. I feel like at some point the doctors have to talk us women out of our crazy ideas!

I was induced all 3 times for different reasons...

1st - High BP at 36 weeks and stress to Victoria

2nd - past due date and it was scheduled by my doc...I also had short spats with high BP and it was going higher with each day

3rd - Last visit on day before due date showed elevated BP...sent to hospital like with #1 and delivered after 19 hours or induction...ughh.

I never was able to go on my own...stupid high BP...although, I must admit, I liked it being scheduled with #2 and #3...#1 was crazy....

I had the joy (or made the mistake) of watching The Business of Being Born recently. I am three months pregnant. I am terrified of induction and C-section now. I am even seriously considering no epidural.

Oh shit. I have to birth a baby in six months.
