Introducing...

Our newest baby!!!

"Papa's Surprise" was born today at around 1:00pm. Pretty sure it is a girl, and pretty perky.

I am relieved, because her momma got her big ole horns caught in the hay ring (in an opening at the ground that she should not have fit through in the first place) in the Fall, drug it around for who knows how long and was just quivering from exhaustion when we got to her...  That little event broke her (she used to be a fireball and now she is pretty docile and even mopey) but there were no injuries...but I feared the stress could have compromised her pregnancy.

Apparently it did not, and she surprised us today by delivering first, even though another cow seemed more ready.

So... Papa's Surprise.

Yep.  You know it's dire when you're jealous of a cow...  :P

hehe... I have always been jealous of them...it really does not seem to hurt them (even first time heifers maybe MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO once right at the end) and well... yeah I had mine cut out.

See I was thinking maybe I need to try getting my head stuck in something to move this show along but now?  Perhaps standing in a paddock is the key to a pain free birth?  I can even moo if it'd help.  :P

That must be it!!!!!  I will put you out to pasture tomorrow!wink

:D  Now grass?  Do you think grass is a necessary component of this whole scheme or should I just generally up my greens intake?  :P

(I so can't get the image of pregnant me standing in the middle of a paddock mooing out of my head.  It's not a pretty sight!  :P )

:-( it would be kinda fun though!

I think that Lisa told us a story about Dr Bradley once, that he started development of his birthing methods by observing cows and that he said the key to keep the perineum and such from tearing was exposure to sunshine...

...  Exposure to sunshine?!?!  I'm not even sure I'd be comfortable with a UV lamp in my own house!  Imagine if you took it a wee bit too far and burnt your perineum and... surrounding area.  Right before giving birth!  Hahaha!  Ouch much?  :P  Can't imagine it'd help with recovery...  :P

How long does it take a cow to give birth?  Do they have a prolonged labor period with contractions or is it pretty straight forward?  Do they get huffy in the lead up?  Do the other cows care?

I bred rabbits at one point but Sammie was a useless mother.  She used to only want to feed one maybe two babies and the rest would get kicked clear across the room if they tried to go near her.  She would let me pick her up and flip her over so that the little ones she was happily starving would be able to latch on and have a feed.

I had a waiting list for these rabbits because they'd all run up to you and fall on their backs to get their tummies rubbed...  :D  Oh when I had time!  :P /end ridiculous tangent.

Your little calf is so cute!  Is she all wobbly on?

Johana, when are you due? I thought it was April but may have remembered incorrectly.

Wobbly yes! adorably cute... and by tomorrow her wobblyness (yep, made that up) will be all but gone.

The process is remarkably similar to human birth... except it does not usually take very long (once she lays down, it usually no more that 20 minutes to an hour max) and the calf is delivered head AND front legs first.
