Very few things astound me. . .

Started by Lisa , author of Roerdink Ramblings 2/8/2012 8:04:07 PM

when it comes to teaching middle school, but this year and today, especially, I have just been astounded.

Today I had two of my male 6TH GRADERS suspended for tea bagging another student against his will. SIXTH GRADERS?!! Another kid suspended from a different team today also for feeling up girls legs against their will. SIXTH???!!!

Earlier this year I had one of my girls report to me that another boy in the class grabbed her breast. Then while he was suspended, he had his friends harass another girl whom he thought reported him, leading me to believe he must have done the same to her. That girl's mom pulled her out to home school her.

WHAT THE HELL? SIXTH GRADERS? These kids are 11 and 12 years old. (Some even 10.) There is no excuse for this.

:-( :-(

I just do not know what to say...

I want to protect my kids from this kind of stuff for as long as possible... but what are we supposed to do when 11 year olds are coming to school with that kind of knowledge, AND the guts to DO things like that?

A fellow parent called me today about something that happened in PE class.  When the weather is bad, the teacher brings a WII to school and they do Just Dance or other WII games that are physical...  well apparently in her daughter's PE hour, there were some kids doing "Michael Jackson crotch grabbing moves and bending over, grabbing their ankles and shaking their butts in the air"

sigh....

Yeah, it definitely has me either wanting to quit working again in time for Jude to start school in 3 years and just home school or KEEP working and pay to send him to the Christian school in the next town. (Not that I don't think there can be poorly behaved children at private schools, just that the environment is smaller and much better controlled at this one and kids who dare to misbehave can be kicked out right away.)

True story, lady! In 10 years of teaching in the same community (same school, same grade. . .) I have NEVER seen anything like this ONCE, let alone 4 times in the same school year. I was actually furious that these two boys were only suspended 5 days. Had I been the admin, I would have expelled them.

Me too Molly!  I know we can't protect our kids forever but it's scary to think about these issues with kids who are so young!

Wow.. just wow.

My husband teaches middle school too. Although he says the 6th graders are perfect. Every year they get a little worse. He says eighth graders are awful! It's the reason I like to work with the little kids. K-2nd.. perfect in my book

You know...   6th Grade was pretty awful for me, but 7th grade was when I witnessed my first peer pregnancy....

I know locally, 6th thru 8th is the "oh shit" age group.

I think it is the "make or break" years...and if the parents are not on top of it, it can get REALLY bad.

You have to be an incredibly special person to teach/admin 6th thru 8th.

Seriously. They need the message LOUD and CLEAR that sexual harassment is NOT FUNNY and NOT OK. I'd be furious, and so so sad for the people they hurt.

Me too!! and my kids are 11- TWENTY!  I am shocked and appalled...

and, I must admit, after a couple of traumatic emotionally years with me, my 2nd child, who decided to try PS is getting 97% or more in all of his classes, including AP...

I am never going to EVER send my kids to PS unless they ask for it.  DANG.  This report REALLLLY disturbs me.
