Apparently SGK is severing ties with PP.

What are your thoughts on this?

I have such a hard time with these types of issues.  Most of my friends are VERY vehemently for or against this or that... and I am just of the opinion that people need to be able to choose what's right for them.

As for a foundation, I guess they have to do what they feel is right for them.  Maybe the SGK was formed with a particular... um, what is the WORD??  Maybe they started with a particular stance on the causes that PP goes against, and its their right to cut ties if they feel that's what they need to do.

Goodness.  How VAGUE can I be???  Sorry.  I'm not a debater, obviously!!  I can't form a coherent thought... now I'll come back later and see all of these well spoke posts and I'll just agree with someone else who said it better.

I think it is a bad idea for SGK to sever ties with one of the leading providers of breast exams and mamograms in the USA, based on their "other" services.

NINETY SEVEN percent of PP's "business" has nothing to do with abortions, and for them to get the bad rap for them when they are providing so many other necessary and needed women's health services is bull-shiz.

I think SGK is the real loser in this. Since it was announced, PP has pretty much made up all of the money in donations that SGK would have given them whereas I have seen a lot of people posting on Facebook that they are done giving money or support to SGK. In addition to that, I have seen a lot of chatter about the other shady things that SGK does such as their high administrative costs, and suing other organizations for using "the cure."

I think it is a shame that SGK has chosen politics over women's health. The invention of the little bylaw they are claiming prevents them from funding Planned Parenthood coincided with the hiring of Karen Handel, a woman who ran for governor of Georgia who campaigned on defunding Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood does a lot of good. They do breast cancer screenings, give free pap smears and birth control to those that cannot afford it (oh and birth control prevents abortion), they do prenatal care and have sponsored healthy baby initiatives. They may provide abortion services, but it is 3% of their total work and you know who else provides abortions--many many other clinics and ob/gyns.

Jody that is just it. People dont realize that most of the PP across this country do REFERRAL services. They do referrals for mammograms that are funded by SGK. They do referrals to OB/GYNs who do prenatal care, follow up appointments and testing for abnormal paps. They also do REFERRALS to OB's who perform abortions. They provide education on family planning. They supply birth control. They help with getting help for people who feel that they are in an unsafe relationship. They offer referrals for adoption services.

People are hell bent on shutting down Planned Parenthood because 3% of the services provided are abortions....they chose to ignore the 97% of everything else that they do.

I guess my question is were they giving money that was going towards abortions and family planning services, and if so why?

It seems the simple solution would be to make their money went towards breast cancer prevention and similar services rather than pulling out altogether.

(Even though I'm pro-life, I do think Planned Parenthood does offer some good and vital services)

I was honestly in my 30's before I even heard about the abortion connection.  Where I grew up, I went to PP all the time for my yearly visits and birth control because otherwise I wouldn't have been able to afford it.  I was really confused the first time I heard someone say they were against PP.

I think it's unfortunate as they offer a lot of a services that are very benifical. Before we got married that is where I went to get my BC because I didn't have insurance and I could afford their service.

This morning on"The View" they said it was all because of new polices for SGK. That they are not allowed to support any organization that is under investigation. That being said the investigation was launched because of a Republican congressmen claiming that they were using federal money for abortions which has been venimously denied. IDK the answer it just seems very unfortunate.

The money was only going towards screening for breast cancer.

I think SGK is just shady shady in general (much like the H$US). This is going to be a very bad thing for them i think.

I think this is really unfortunate.  Even though PP has been able to make up the money they would have gotten from SGK this year because of all the controversy, it is unlikely the same thing will happen next year and the year after that.

The fact is that PP provides medical services for the most needy and SGK's decision will make it harder for them to do that. I'm biased though, I've always been a PP supporter, I got basically 100% of my medical care from them all through college and law school.  For many many young women the only doctor you will see all year will be your GYN.

That said, from what I have been reading lately, SGK has been doing some not so charitable things with the bulk of their money lately, so maybe something like this was necessary to shine a light on an organization that many people contribute to so that people can be sure that their donations are actually going towards charitable purposes.
