I Need Your Expertise! :)

Hey all!

Sorry, I don't comment much any more....but, I am certainly a lurker.

I have question for you, if you have been reading our blog, you know we are going through the process of purchasing our first home.

But, I am a planner....and I want to know what to expect from utility costs.  Any advice?  The home we are purchasing is about 3000 square feet....if that makes a difference in pricing.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Are you talking average electricity bills etc?

I imagine that knowing the BTU/Tonage of the HVAC unit(s) and such would be important..but there is a nice little caluclator here> http://www.consumerspower.org/home_energy/billestimator.php

that is probably pretty accurate for estimating!

Congrats on the impending homeownership!

Thank you!  I really appreciate the link!  :)

Just need to figure out the water bill!

Oh, and if anyone has a similar sized house....what are your expenses?

Water bill (if no outdoor sprinkler systems are used etc) is directly related to the number of people in the household.

Also take into consideration dishwasher vs. handwashing etc and the type of washing machine (low water front load or regular top load.) If everything is the same as where you were before (same type of dishawshing, same type of clothes washing and same number of people) then the water bill should be the same as before.

:-)

Have you put an offer on the the house?  One of the conditions of sale can be presentation of utlility bills - usually around here the sellers present the potential buyers with the average cost of the utilities per month, it's pretty standard here.

The only difference is, our current home (an apartment) doesn't have laundry.  Not quite sure what the extra cost will be per month to add this to our water bill.

Thanks Claire.  We have not put the offer in, yet.  We are waiting to do another walk-thru of the house....and chat with the realtor a bit.  I didn't know they typically did this, but I am so glad they do!

I understand!  Most modern washing machine's can be researched on the internet to find their average water usage... You will have options on a top loader for small, medium or large loads etc that changes the water usage, and if it is front loader it automatically gauges the most efficient water level for the load...

Either way, doing your laundry at home will add to the water bill and electric bill marginally, but in the end it does come out cheaper than a pay-laundromat!
