When to take the pacifier away?

Started by Alicia , author of I am wicked cheap! 4/15/2010 8:23:44 PM

Hi everyone, I need your opinion.

I have twin girls who are 18 months old and TOTALLY DEPENDENT on their pacifiers.

With 4 kids under 5, the hubby and I just don't want to deal with trying to take them away (especially when one of them wakes up at 2 a.m. and won't stop crying unless you give her a pacifier).

My sister, a pacifier nasty, takes her kids' pacifiers away at 9 months....no matter what!  She has been nagging me a little bit, telling me that 'it is time' to get rid of them.

What do I do?  We are not 'in the mood' to try and take them away, but I also don't want them to be 5 and still walking around with pacifiers.

So, I was wondering...how dependent were your kids on pacifiers?  And when did you take them away?

Yeah this is a touchy subject! I totally know what you mean about not being in the mood!

With my first daughter it was easy because she grew out of it early. But my second daughter was a whole different story. She was very dependent on her "binkie" and her pooh bear. I have a picture of her at 2ish  getting ready to leave the house holding pooh and she took the bink out of her mouth to smile.

It was me who didn't want to take it because that meant she was not a baby anymore! But soon after that I did take it. I kept some in case of emergency. She was old enough to understand that she wasn't a baby anymore so it was ok but we did go through withdrawal nonetheless!

She would see another child's and try to put it in her mouth! She was totally hooked. Do it when you're ready. You're already thinking about it, so that is the first step.  Explain to them why you are taking it, and make them throw them in garbage so they get that they are "bye bye" forever! Set a goal say 20 months old and start talking to them about getting rid of it. Think of some small rewards and praise them for not using the baby pacifier! Because they are big girls now! Good Luck!
