Bottle Weaning

Started by Zoey Martin , author of Good Goog 3/4/2010 9:57:54 PM
Anybody have any tips on bottle weaning? My daughter is quite capable of drinking out of a cup, but still relies on the bottle for extra comfort. She usually just has the one at night. But sometimes I'll give her a bottle during the day if she's having a rough time/teething or needs help getting to sleep. She turns two in April. Should I be taking it away? And any tips on how to go about it as painlessly as possible?

Is there a reason why you want it to stop?  I'm not really sure of the issues with taking a bottle so rarely at her ate (are there any?).  As long as she doesn't sleep with it in her mouth there shouldn't be any teeth issues.

Sorry, I'm no help :-(

I have visions of her still having a bottle when she's 5! I don't know when people normally get rid of the bottle but I have a feeling it's when they're around 2 or so. I don't know if there are any natural weaning points or if it's just like a dummy and you've just got to go through a couple of rough days. But maybe like with everything - it's best to just relax and see what happens!

I know "they" say to start transitioning to a sippy at 12 months, but Riley drinks from a cup so you've got that down.

We're now just starting to really try with the sippy, but honestly she seems to hate it (though maybe that's one thing that we'll have to wait and see on with her corrected 1st birthday).

Ahhhhhh wait and see not a concept I'm good at :P

Ah sippy cups! It seemed like it took ages for Riley to work it out and once she did she was forever figuring out ways to pour the water/milk/whatever all over the floor (even with the spill-free ones!) It seemed like once she started getting the hang of it she could pretty much drink out of a cup anyway!

HAHA yeah we seem to be heading down that route too...Alexa loves to shake it out all over her highchair.  She actually drinks pretty well out of a glass or plastic water bottle, but she can't hold it up to her own lips :-)

We started using only sippy cups and cups with Elias when he was 13 months old.  We're soon going to make that transition with my one year old.  With Elias, we just put away the bottles one day (when we went on vacation) and he never really seemed to notice.

I do think that it's quite possible that the whole bottle thing is more of a big deal in my head than it is in hers! I think once the teething is over I'll tell her we are getting rid of them at the end of the week and just do it.
