About time I actually kicked this thing off! What's your parenting style?

I created this community eons ago and just kind of forgot about it. I'd like to make this an active place for my readers to interact.

So please, introduce yourself...leave a link to your blog or anything you would like me and the other community members to see.

As for me, I'm a momma to three boys, ages 16, 11, 2 (very soon). I've been a wife for almost 14 years.

My husband and I have a different approach to parenting than most. Our children know they can discuss anything with us and that we will always be honest in return. We are very strict when it comes to, well everything but lenient in other ways. We are not materialistic and would rather share a meal as a family then spend a bunch of money on something that will waste away in a week's time.

How are we different? We're honest, sometimes brutally so. We don't watch our language. We feel if we're ourselves all the time then maybe our kids won't try to hide who they are. We enforce school as the #1 priority and encourage reading as "fun" even though the boys don't love it yet. Well, we're trying to make them love it. Our boys aren't handed anything without first earning it.

I love my kids with all my heart and soul but I admittedly wish them away occasionally. Don't we all?

What's your parenting style?

My style leans toward understanding and explanation. My husband's is loud and guaranteed to stop or encourage a repeat of a certain behavior, depending on the reason he had to be loud in the first place. They both work, but every day I try to find the middle ground between the two.
