New homeschool household..

Started by Erica , author of A look into the life of a fire fighter wife... 5/9/2010 1:25:51 AM

We will be homeschooling my soon to be 4th grader this coming school year for the first time. I was wondering if anyone had / has any tips for us on do's and don'ts, things that have worked well for them, etc...

TIA

I am always interested to hear from home schoolers in blogging.  I was home schooled K-12.  Overall I am extremely thankful for the experience, and would hope to be able to do the same if I were ever to have kids.  I love the opportunity to personalize the learning experience.

Having stated that, there are several areas that have to be carefully handled.  The first is social interaction.  I was fairly social for a homeschooler, but a lot of my friends were also schooled at home.  Just make sure you're child is involved enough outside of the home.  If he's already in grade four I imagine he's developed skills to that level.

The other isn't particularly relevant in grade four.  I also think that SATs in the States make this less of a concern for an American home schooler.  To enter postsecondary after home education is less groundbreaking for Americans then us (I'm Canadian).  However, as you work into grade 10 and beyond it's so important that you make sure he'll have options open upon graduation.

Best of luck!  I hope I've encouraged you in this undertaking.  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, or whatever.

I was a homeschooled kids also Kris! =) but I did it through out Jr high and high school. So I totaly understand what you mean about having things out side the home. Melessa is a little soical butterfly so we aren't really all that worried - and that she also is a cheerleader so she already has something to do. But thank you for the tips!!

I'm very curious to read the responses to this!  I'm also starting out homeschooling a 4th grader, along with 2nd, 1st and preschool.  Suggestions are ALWAYS welcome!

What state are you in Molly? we are going to be home schooling though the connections academy... what about you?

I'm in hawaii for now, but we'll be moving to Florida in about a week.  I'm not sure what we've decided on honestly, if it's going to be an all in one curriculum or if I'm actually going to brave it and create my own!  We had such a terrible experience with the math used at the kids school that thats really the deciding factor on what curriculum we'll go with!  I may have to double check connections academy!  What drew you to them?

One of the things about CA that we really liked is that it is a 'public school' so they send you all of your 'things' for free- book, art supplies, everything- some will even get a computer and printer to use for the school year, the only thing you pay for is to send everything back at the end of the school year. When we started looking in to programs we were very dishearted when we saw how much it was going to cost for the year for everything. Money is tight right now since DH is on workers comp for a knee problem. And after watching an online course and watching some of the student videos on you tube and seeing how 'closed' they are- online classes on a closed forum, we will have the teachers personal e-mail and phone number in case we ever need it or even need help. they do field trips with other HS familys in the area... the list just goes on and on. I was a little worried too that I wasn't going to be able to 'teach' her everything that she was going to need to know for the year. I didn't go to school in the state that we are currently living in and I know there are things that the state requires she learn that California did require, I woas worried that I would miss something and we would all end up in trouble!
