Are you a bilingual family?

Started by Julie , author of Julie and Martin 4/21/2011 3:02:26 PM

We are, although it is not easy.

My husband is German and I am American. Our girls speak predominantly English as we live here outside DC. It's hard to find German-language resources here. I can find all the Spanish things I could ever want, but very little Deutsch, so it's a challenge.

What about you, if you are a bilingual family? How do you involve both cultures in your lives?

We are trying to have Maggie Moo learn German. Our landlady, who lives next door, is German (but lived in England and Texas so speaks perfect English, as well as Russian and French) and she's over all the time talking to Maggie and playing with her. Some village girls come over and play with her too.

I'm hoping when she's old enough I'll put her in German kindergarten. Of course, she's only 7 months old right now so "ba-ba-ba-ba" is all she can say. :)

That would be an awesome experience for her!! Our oldest daughter spent her first years in Italy, and her little neighborhood friends (who were school-age) were all Italian, so it didn't take long for her to start babbling in Italian, too. Kids pick that stuff up SO fast!
