Clean Up... Clean Up! Getting the Kids (and Mom!) Excited About Cleaning + Win a House Cleaner for a Day!

I have these mom stress moments. You know the ones. I walk into a room that looks like it has just experienced a tornado. My head starts to spin and I feel my blood pressure rise. My kids (wise from experience) quickly start to sneak out of the room. It has happened so many times over the years that you would think it wouldn't stress me anymore... but it does.

Then, because I too, am wise from experience... I go to my "happy place" ... and find the courage to start singing (and I am a horrible singer!).... the Clean Up Song:

It’s time to clean up clean up
Everybody do your share
Clean up clean up
Soon the mess will not be there

Clean up clean up
Look at this we’re almost done
Toys away -- hey hey hey
Clean-up can be fun....

And just like a few little dwarfs out of the movie Snow White...everyone swings into action. Ever since my kids were teeny tiny ... we have used the clean up song to motivate us while we pick up toys.  I have a basket or "toy box" in just about every room ... so it's really easy for everyone to do their share. Books back on shelves, stuffed animals back in baskets, and toys in the toy boxes. It's the weirdest darn thing. I can go from completely stressed to la-la land chill in a matter of minutes, and you know why? Because I made a decision a long time ago to STOP getting stressed over a messy house. That doesn't mean that I DON'T get stressed anymore about it ... it just means that I have learned how to STOP when I feel it coming on and move forward to a happier place.

See, I started realizing that as soon as things were picked back up, I felt good again. . . and the fact of the matter is, it really isn't that hard to put things back where they go. . . and the process of getting there CAN be fun. I want to have fun with my kids and enjoy them whenever I can ... so why not make even the "not so fun" moments fun. Who said picking up can't be fun? ... and of course, kids can have fun doing just about anything, especially if they don't know better.

And of course, over the years... to keep everyone motivated, we have had to spice it up a bit. Sometimes we sing reaaaaalllly s --- l--- o----w  and move like turtles and other times we sing superrrrrrr fasssssssssssssst and race around like airplanes. It's all really just about having fun ... and what this has taught me is that kids can have fun doing anything. It's moms that need to chill out an break into song now and then...it's good for the soul, I tell you!

I simply tell my little one that I'd throw toys away or suck them up with a vacuum cleaner. Man, they work!!!

We sing the clean up song as well, although ours is different than the one you mentioned. To spice it up, every one and a while I announce before we begin that the best cleaner-upper will be crowned the grand supreem cleaner upper and will be giving the privlege of choosing a side for dinner and the dessert. When mommy has to clean up by herself, she keeps something she finds not put away. The toys in time-out then become prizes for picking up w/o mommy having to ask twice. This stratagy is two-fold, as the kids quickly learned that toys they play with and don't put away disappear, and the only way to earn them back is to clean up your toys.

I'm not 100% HOW we get our little one to help clean up...but when we say its time to clean up and start singing the song, she just follows suit...as long has she has mommy or daddy to help

Mostly they each have their specific chore for a week, and can't play until its done! Mom helps with the hard stuff, and of course supervises and checks!

Every once in a while we tell our kids that it's time to weed out toys they no longer play with to make room for new ones, and the ones they're willing to part with we donate to needier folks.

It was so hard to get my 8 yr old motivated to clean up. We made a chore chart and there are 3 chores per week that my son has to check off once he does them. He really feels a sense of accomplishment when he gets to check them off. At the end of the week he gets $3 for completing them and most of the time if he does a good job he gets a bonus $2! =)

My daughter is 3 (4 in December). Every night before bed she has to pick up her ENTIRE room. She also has to go through the house and pickup any toys strewn around. Sometimes, when she's dragging at it, we play a game. I'll say "Find me something you put on your feet". Then she'll find shoes. Or "Find me something that growls" and she'll find me a stuffed dog...I'm trying to teach her that responsibility. When my 14m old is old enough, he'll be involved in the clean up too.
