Last month, Kenmore asked for my biggest household challenge ...and THIS month, I am sharing my Genius Tip on how I overcame that challenge!! Kenmore is on the search for everyday genius & each month they are giving away $3,000 in Kenmore Gift Certificates!! My challenge was to create more genuinely fun and true "priceless" moments with my kids.
How did I do this? I created "Mommy Time Out" ... a little promise to myself to grab random moments in time and just STOP, and put myself in Time Out ... Time Out from everything that I am doing to just have fun! Kind of like STOP.DROP and ROLL... except this is STOP. DROP... and laugh your head off. Have you ever seen the look on a child's face when you surprise them by saying "yes" instead of "no"? Well... in the past few weeks, I have grown to LOVE that look. I haven't spent a dime in implementing this new "fun factor" ... all I have really spent on this is imagination. I have tried to catch my kids off guard by doing fun little random things that they will hopefully look back on and laugh (ok, and maybe wonder if their mom is a bit crazy?) but most of all .. moments that will make them feel the love that we share as a family. Here are a couple of the things we have done randomly in the last two weeks:
Worm Hunt Expedition: My son and daughter and I went on a "worm" hunting expedition . . . the hunt was a success, and the memories of my kids screaming in delight each time we found and elusive worm ... priceless!
Driveway Disco: Ok, for real. When pulling into the driveway one night, a blast from my past song came on the radio and I told my kids ... I used to boogie to this song. They both looked at my like I had said a dirty word. "What's Boogie?" ... so right then and there ... I cranked up the radio, opened all the doors to the car and the three of us danced in the driveway for a good half hour. . . under the stars. AWESOME. (even awesomer... in case you are wondering ... is the fact that we live way out in the country so NO neighbors were harmed in this priceless expression of fun)
Now, obviously I can't be over the top fun mom all the time (or can I? lol) ... but I do want my kids to find joy in the simple things, because truly, no matter what life throws at them, I want them to appreciate the pure joy of being alive, and not depend on material things or expensive events to make them happy. I love putting myself in Mommy Time Out .... it's a great place to be.
