How Do I Grow My Blog? Episode 4 - Domain Names

What's stopping you from getting your own domain name?

Godaddy.com did not pay me to use their name, I just happen to use them for buying domain names!

Sarah Mae! You're early! :)

Great video today! A few months ago, I decided to buy learningastheygrow.com. I didn't really know what I was doing and I ended up losing it somehow (I still own it, just can't get to it). So now I have kristyblogs.com instead. :) and blogger transferred everything over for me which made it so much easier.

Thanks for more awesome advice!

I do have a domain name, but I paid $20 through Godaddy because it said I was going to have all my personal info published in a directory or something if I didn't pay for personal protection...yikes!  I already blog "incognito" lol  I didn't want my phone numnber and address out there!

Did I misunderstand this?  Do most people pay for this or am I the only one to do so

I agree, it really took my blogging to the next level once I got my own domain. Thanks for the video, Sarah Mae!

Ugh.  You are preaching to me this morning.  Two days ago, I had the domain name process underway, put it in my Go Daddy cart, and then got cold feet.  No clue why... I just did!

So, now I am going to log back in and DO IT.  I already feel so much more "professional" after having created this blogfrog account just to post this comment... lol :o)

My blog has only been around for a little over three months, so your series has been very inspiring for me.  Thanks so much, Sarah Mae!

I'm back again...

Question:  I bought the domain name at Go Daddy, then set forwarding to my blog.  Is there a better way to do this, though? After you are forwarded, it still shows the blogspot address in the address bar.  Thoughts?  Suggestions?

Thanks so much!

I'm definitely gonna research this one!

i'm curious about your situation as well FlamingoMom...

let me know about that!

Jaime - you can not only have your .com forwarded to your blogspot URL, as you've done,  but you can have it MASKED (or hidden) which will NOT show the blogspot URL but  just your original.com . That is what I did for a year until I switched to Wordpress. It's in the same spot on Godaddy where you had it forwarded. HTH, Jen

I just bought my name, but the .com was already taken, unless I want to include my middle initial! (It didn't give me that option at the time. Didn't know I could buy another name, and just send it over to my blog. I would like to buy my blog's name, too.) So, I went with www.wendygunn.net but I didn't know that I had to go to FeedBlitz and change it there, (and everywhere else that it was the old url).  Fortunately, a friend alerted me to the fact that my posts weren't coming automatically anymore, after a few days.  I think I now have everything working again, but it took some time. I did go through GoDaddy also, for $10/year.  Sarah Mae, if I want to buy other names, do you know, is there any advantage to buying them from the same place, or can I buy without any problem from someone else. (My 24-year-old son told me that I maybe should have bought it from someone else, because of GoDaddy's inappropriate ads.)  I don't see wonderful things happening from buying my name yet, but I've also been making blog design changes and getting Google Analytics and signing on to BlogFrog--lots of changes this week, so if great things happen, I won't know what to give the credit to!  I'm really enjoying these videos (also fun to be able to say, "Yep! Did that already:)"!  Thanks, Sarah Mae!  Now, If I can just figure out BlogFrog!
