How long do you wait to bring your kids to the doctor?

Started by Mama M. , author of My Little Life 3/9/2010 10:20:02 AM
I'm torn over here...

Yeah, I know I'm a nurse...which is actually why this is probably harder for me!!

I hate taking my kids to the doctor. I hate that they get exposed to ALL the crap that's going around...but, (hello insecurities) I don't wanna be "one of those moms".

I work with these doctors...so, not only do I feel the "normal" pressure to be a good mom...I also don't want them to think I'm a terrible nurse!!

Crazy, I know...

So, here's my thing...my babe had pneumonia a while ago (6 weeks? And yes, I brought her in!!)...but, ever since, she's had a yucky nose.

It gets better (but doesn't go away), then it gets worse...she's also been complaining off and on of ear pain.

No fever, plays great, eats great, looking at her you'd never know (unless her nose is particularly nasty at the time).

Do I bring her in? 6 weeks (or more?!) seems like a long time to have a snotty nose...but, with no fever...I have a hard time believing it is anything bacterial?!!

GAH!! Why can't I just be a mom and not throw in the nurse card?!!!

I hate that decision. After everything we've been through I hate to take kids to the doctor office. I hate the germs. If I take Colby with me because Riley is sick then he usually gets something even though he's in his wheelchair and not down in the junk. He's just super sensitive like that. On the other hand we're at the Children's hospital usually once every other month for some appointment for him or another. So it's not like I cant' just stop taking him to the doctor. We've been swapping sinus infections around this house like crazy. I hate to over use an antibiotic but it seems like my kids just can't get over them this year no matter what we give them. Oh and just for fun none of my three have yet to have a fever with their infections so that's why I held off taking them in to.

Oh great, Erin.

Now I'm thinking I should bring her in!!

Did they diagnose by symptoms or did they do a CT scan?

Ugh...

That happened to my five year old last year.  He kept getting runny noses and complaining about his ear.  I would hold off taking him in because when I did, the doctor said it was just allergies.  At one point, even sent us to an allergist.  Nothing got better and he didn't have any allergies.  They took a scan and everything.  Finally, I took him to an ENT because this had lasted about a year (never really got fevers, only when things got backed up and he ended up with an ear infection) and they said his ears were fine but took some soft tissue pics of his adenoids.  Found out they were "huge" and once he removed them, he hasn't been sick since.  That's just what happened to us and it was the best thing ever!  There is only so much snot one mama can handle!

what did you end up doing?

how is she doing?

Status quo!

I haven't brought her in (nurse's hang-up)...she's happy and playful and otherwise feels well...

My daycare provider reminded me that she did the same thing last winter...had a chronically runny nose...

Man, I'm hoping it's not her adenoids...irrational fear of mine = anesthesia!!!

i never take my kids in. well the older three never go in but i take the baby (4 year old in) because i had a doctor i trusted and when she gets sick it is fast and hard. honest she turned 4 in Oct and i have yet to take her in for a check up

has she ever been tested for allergies?

my 2nd used to recover slowly from colds & his pediatrician gave him Nasonex (the spray with the antonio banderes bee) because he would get ear infections over and over. when his ear hurts at all I give him one spray and the ear stops hurting and his runny nose goes away.

No...she hasn't been tested...but it's crossed my mind!

We are an "allergic" family! My oldest has mulitple allergies and had asthma, which he seems to have outgrown. I have many allergies...

So, it wouldn't surprise me. But, I'm stumped...'cuz I'd think she'd have a yuckier nose in the spring and fall with allergies...not winter...unless she's allergic to dust. In which case...she's doomed!! ;)

I'm one of those Mom's who waits it out a bit.  I hate having to drag 3 kids to the Dr and end up getting them sick, too.  Usually around here it is nothing bad.  In fact, my youngest, 3-year-old Micah, has never had an antibiotic yet.  But ya know, each kid is so different.  My middle child (Emily) doesn't get sick much, but when she does...I take her because when she actually acts sick...you know she is SICK!  There is no easy answer to this question!

Mama M.  my son's allergies are worse in the winter than any other time of year.

Sinus infections -- babies don't get them supposedly.   My doctor told me that your sinuses take awhile to form all of the way so little ones don't get sinus infections.  Not sure what i think about that.
