Need cleaning suggestions!

Started by CFMama , author of Nathan's Fight 8/6/2009 7:13:24 PM
I am sure all mamas, first time mamas, and cf mamas can relate to my dilemma here...lack of a clean house.

I can't seem to keep up with what I need to do.  My primary concern is keeping the dishes and nebulizer cups clean.  In the meantime my hardwood floors are filthy (sticky), my toilets need scrubbing, my carpets need to be vacuumed, my counters are covered in papers, insurance forms, mail, receipts, etc.  My house needs help but I can't offer any help because I am overwhelmed with mommyhood and cystic fibrosis.

Nathan will not allow me any time to scrub or organize.

I would really appreciate your suggestions.

When mine were little, that means a 1yo and an infant, I would put the older one in charge of a chore in the room I was in.  I did not expect her to accomplish it well, I just wanted to occupy her.  For example, if I was sweeping the kitchen floor, I would ask her to stand by the counter and see if anything that wasn't trash went into the pile.  If it did, she would get it out and take it to the edge of the carpet.  I would put the baby in the other sink if I was washing dishes or something of the sort.  And always, always, make everything a game and full of praise.  When the older one played in an inch of water before bath time, I would put the baby in her baby bathtub and scrub the toilet, sink, and floor.  When they were 1 and 2, I would let them blow bubbles in the kitchen after I swept and before I mopped.  Then they would each get a rag and help me clean up the mess.  Neither one had CF.  But the baby was hospitalized twice in her first year and on breathing treatments around the clock for the first four years.  And I was single, with no family support.  I also learned to let a lot go.  I found that if I slept when they slept I actually got more doen than if I stayed up and tried to get things done when I was too tired to function.  I hope this helps.  I pray for your family daily.

I once had a paper that had a big chore a day. Took a very small amount of time just doing one thing. Then there was always a 5 - 10 min pick up at the end of the night.

For example: Monday - clean bathrooms, Tuesday - vacuum, Wednesday - mop. etc. Then on the 5 - 10 min pick up, just run around the house at the end of the night pick up all the dirty dishes, shoes, toys. The woman that told me about this said every night she fluffed her pillows on the couch.

One you get in the routine it gets easier and things stay cleaner.

Yeah, my house looks like a tornado hit it quite a bit of the time.  When my daycare is in session that helps actually because I HAVE to have it clean when the parents drop off/pick up.  I also try to make a list of the BIG things that need done and give them each a day of the week.  Then I (try) to do 2-3 loads of laundry a day, throughout the day.  When I wake up I throw a load in the wash, then switch it around lunchtime and then finish after dinner.  Honestly, you are not going to have a clean house when your kids are little unless you hire Mary Poppins and Merry Maid!

Ugh...Me toooooo

I'm consumed with keeping my sons medical stuff clean/sterlized/washed and basically just keeping him alive and on and on and round and round it goes......Mine is pathetic. It seriously looks like the inside of my house threw up on itself....

Aside from assuming the fetal position in some remote corner of my closet sucking my thumb whilst rocking aimlessly back and forth....

I just Dunno.....

Prozac maybe? Ativan? Could be it might just numb you enough that the existence of all the clutter/mess would just fade?

Let me think on this and see if  I can offer a suggestion that seems a bit more sane rather than my wacked out run very quickly away from this psycho momma tips ;)

Wow, what fantastic suggestions.  I really think I could clean the bathrooms if I do what Tricia recommended and let Nathan play in an inch of water in the tub. (Thanks Tricia for the prayers too).

When he gets a little bit older, I will occupy him with some small tasks.  Right now, when the dishwasher door opens, it takes him less than ten seconds to get there and start removing dishes or standing on the door.

I did a load of laundry yesterday and will do what Jenney says and do a load a day until I have no loads to do. =)

And for a big chore each day, Today I will vacuum!

Can you stick him in a carrier (like a Mei Tai) while you clean?  I take a few minutes each day to vacuum and whenever I wash dishes I take a few seconds to wipe down counters.  Bathrooms?  I have been known to spray some Method cleaner and grab a baby wipe while I'm brushing my teeth.  Multi-tasking at its best!  My house is far from spotless, but generally it is not completely filthy.  I can't help with the piles of mail, papers, etc. because I am guilty of piling those in a box under my computer desk.  I try to hide them and hope they sort themselves.  It's not working so far...

I do flylady.  There is a link on my blog sidebar.  She has great tips and you can follow on facebook and twitter.  I don't always do everything she says but it has really helped me get a perspective on things.  I do one load of laundry per day.  I also clean the bathrooms while my kids are bathing showering etc. It is tough but remember baby steps!

My Mom was telling me about about Fly Lady!  I went to her website and it looked pretty cheesy - turns out hundreds of thousands of people visit her website and read her books!

I do think that Fly Lady's website needs an overhaulin' but I am very interested in her suggestions and as soon as I can be done with this enormous party I will be climbing on board the Fly Lady cleaning wagon!

At least I have been keeping up with my laundry and trying to stay on top of the dishes.
