I think Twitter is best described as "Micro-blogging". You make small 140 character or less blog posts throughout the day. These micro-blog posts are called tweets.
Since the posts are so short, they are meant to convey small thoughts or what you are doing right that moment.
People follow you and when you post something it is automatically "pushed" to their twitter account and they get a notification. You follow people (like MckMama) and get her updates pushed to you.
You can post to your twitter account in 3 main ways:
- Your phone (via a text message or twitter program if you have a smart phone)
- via the website twitter.com
- Through a program that you install on your computer called a "twitter client". There are many popular twitter clients like thwirl and twitteriffic.
You can reply to someone by including the @ symbol followed by their username in your post, eg. @mckmama.
All this said I am just starting with Twitter so everyone please feel free to correct or add
