I think Twitter is best described as "Micro-blogging".  You make small 140 character or less blog posts throughout the day.  These micro-blog posts are called tweets.

Since the posts are so short, they are meant to convey small thoughts or what you are doing right that moment.

People follow you and when you post something it is automatically "pushed" to their twitter account and they get a notification.  You follow people (like MckMama) and get her updates pushed to you.

You can post to your twitter account in 3 main ways:
  1. Your phone (via a text message or twitter program if you have a smart phone)
  2. via the website twitter.com
  3. Through a program that you install on your computer called a "twitter client".  There are many popular twitter clients like thwirl and twitteriffic.
You can reply to someone by including the @ symbol followed by their username in your post, eg. @mckmama.

All this said I am just starting with Twitter so everyone please feel free to correct or add

I love twitter, too! I think Rusty did a great job of explaining it. I decided a month or so ago to jump in and sign up. I had no idea what it was all about, but got used to it pretty quickly. If you join, add me! @1momof5 (I have a button on my blog, too)

Watch this short video from the Twitter home page. I think it does a great job of explaining it!
I use Digsby.com to combime facebook, email, IMs & Twitter on my desktop. Other people I know prefer Tweetdeck. It only posts tweets, as far as I know. But it organizes replies, direct messages & all other tweets into different columns. Both are pop-up apps that you can pull up & view when you want. Hope that is helpful!

Do you have to have a Blackberry to twitter? Cuz I don't have one, but I do have unlimited texting ... and would love to be twitterpated. ;-)

Brenda, I tweet exclusively from my computer. I don't have texting capabilities or a blackberry. (my 12 year old daughter thinks we are living in the stone ages!)

Brenda~You can (probably) twitter on your phone. There is a tab that you can reach from your home page via 'Settings.' It is labeled 'Devices' & that's where you enter your cell phone #. The app walks you through the setup pretty well. I have some difficulty with @responses on my Sony Ericsson, but sending & receiving updates is pretty easy. Just like using facebook.

Twitter's sidebar:
Twitter with SMS

Sending updates to Twitter while you're away from your computer makes things much more interesting.

It's all done through text messages (aka "SMS"), which you probably use all the time anyway, so there's not much to learn.

Twitter doesn't charge anything for this, but be sure to know what your text plan looks like with your wireless carrier.

If you use your mobile in Canada, The United States, or India you can also receive updates via SMS. You can text "OFF" to stop receiving and "ON" to start again.

Hope that helps a bit. I can give you more directions if you want but I don't want to write a book here if it's not necessary! I will check back...

I met and communicated with great people on Twitter.  Even though it might look difficult it's really not.  I'm able to post my giveaways, comment to fellow bloggers as well as my followers, and contact others.  You can respond on someone's email just by clicking on "reply" at the buttom of the tweet or if you want to communicate one on one with someone you can DM (direct message) them.  Give it a try, I think you would like it!! :)
