Tightwad Tips

I live very frugal. I am sure many people in this community do too. What do you do to save money and stretch your dollars?

  • In place of kitty litter, I use a bale of shavings that you can buy in a feed store for animal bedding. It is about $4.99 now, it used to be much cheaper. But it lasts for months for 3 cats and I change it daily. A lot cheaper than the store bought kind, plus it will compost into the ground where the regular cat litter did not. The dust from the cat litter made my cat sneeze, so that is why I started doing this.
  • I buy meat in bulk and can it. Much cheaper that way!
  • I also buy vegetables that I do not grow in 50 lb. bags or by the bushel and can them that way. A 50 lb. bag of fresh grown carrots, and these carrots come from Canada and are really big, crisp and tasty! $15.00 and I can about 42 quart jars and keep out some for the horses to eat fresh.
  • Do all your errands in one day. No driving back and forth to get something. Plan your trips.

When I have errands, I drive in one large circle, hitting all the stores and then end up back home.  Saves gas and time.

  • Save the eyes of potatoes and the ends of onions, even if you have bought them at the store. Stick them in your garden and they will grow. Potatoes will grow during the winter underground. Some might not, but many will.

  • I used to boil a pot of potatoes for the week and they can be used for many different things, quickly because they are already cooked. I don't do this anymore only because I hardly eat them since I changed to a low carb diet.

  • I also make up a number of hard boiled eggs and since I eat low carbs they are on my food plan. So I can make egg salad or just eat them with horseradish for a snack.

  • I buy those huge cans of tomato sauce and whole tomatoes when I don't get a good harvest from the garden. For the second year in a row, my tomatoes got hit with the late blight  so no tomatoes for me. Instead I buy the big can of tomatoes,( for us, it is the ones with no sugar) and they are the size restaurants use. I can them up into pint jars for us and that way it is much cheaper and I can make my own chili or sauces from them.

Some very good tips here.

I like the one for saving the potato eyes and the onions and plant them.

Thanks,

Marie

Something I have decided to do since frozen turkeys will be cheap this week is to buy 2 of them, even though we have been planning on having just turkey breast for dinner. I will cook the turkeys and can them. That will give us a lot of future meals. Then I will make turkey stock out of the bones and can that, and probably many jars.

It appears that potatoes are on sale too. So I will buy extra and store some fresh, and can some. They are good to have on hand especially in jars for soups, home fries, casseroles. whatever. Even if we don't eat potatoes a lot, they are good when food budge is tight.
