Any tips to keep flies away?

Started by Dawn , author of Daily Adventures of a Work at Home Mom 6/30/2012 3:45:16 PM

Oh my goodness we have been having a problem with flies this year!! They re-routed the garbage from some of the cities onto the train through our town.  This train goes right by our house (you can see it out the living room window) so when the garbage comes through it brings in the flies.  This train also carries many other kinds of freight and not just garbage, but the little bit of garbage it hauls has created a nuisance.

I have tried so many things but yet the flies are multiplying outside.  We had maggots in our garbage the one week when we went to take it out and it is in a sealed can!!

What do you recommend, preferably natural or at least environmentally friendly?

Wow. What a nuisance. I'm afraid I don't have a lot of experience in this area.

A good old-fashioned fly swatter works for me. The old-fashioned hanging fly strips still work, I believe. As long as they're hanging high enough to keep out of kids and pets reach, that's what I'd try.

If you don't get many replies here, I believe I'd google this topic and see if you can find some good ideas.

Best of luck ridding yourself of the menace.

To chase away the flies come to the food served at a party at home generally use candles, unfortunately sometimes the flame off when the wind blows. To fix this, try the following natural way.

Prepare some lemon citrus fruit, for each - each into four pieces lengthwise. 12 plugs on each piece of dried cloves. Tata blend of lemon slices and cloves on a plate and place it on both ends of the table. Flies can detect the scent of lemon and a spicy clove. This sharp aroma blend acts as a good insect repellent.

They fly all over the deck and get into the outside garbage can :( It is weird tho because I can cook on the grill and we can eat outside without them getting on our food.  They more or less get in the garbage.  It is like something on the deck is attracting them, but they leave our BBQ food alone.  It is frustrating lol!

They actually don't get into our BBQ food.  We can cook out and eat outside with no problems.  They do fly all over our deck and get into the garbage tho.  It is a sealed garbage can on the deck that they somehow get in.  It is weird that they don't bother our food.  They have been getting into the house and flying around driving us crazy, but they haven't been landing on food.  I have noticed they do like poop, the wild cats leave us a present once and a while.  They flies are all over that when the cats have been in the yard.  They are mostly the green flies.

It is hard to control them outside. Inside, like Kristi said, swatters and the hanging fly paper is good, messy and icky but works. Barns usually use big fans around here. Fans will blow them away. Can you put your garbage cans in something bigger? We have a house flies, deer flies and horse flies, so a lot of experience around here. A few chickens or ducks would be helpful......or guinea hens will take care of them.

It is a big garbage can that we put our kitchen bags in.  They have got in it a few times, but once we had maggots in it :( We have a 3 level deck and they hang out on the second floor deck flying above our heads.  Don't often see them land, but I have sprayed the deck with things they supposedly don't like and they don't seem to care.  We are not allowed to have chickens - it is against the law here in town.  We have a small yard too.  These buggers don't often land, just fly around over our heads.  We did put the fly traps outside last year and they got covered quickly! I just wish I knew exactly what was attracting them since they stay out of our food when we cook out and eat on the deck.  It is weird lol!

We had maggots too! It is the hot weather I think. I hate garbage day and pulling that big bag out of that can.

Me too! Yuck! But I also am creeped out by mice and I have had an ongoing fight with them since I moved here. They get into my stuff and poop and pee on stuff for no reason. They don't even steal food. They do steal cat food, but I did not know that until we found their stash in our ceiling. Horrible! I just hate bugs and mice!!!!
