Watermarking Photos?

Started by Byn , author of Beans Monkey Business 2/24/2012 1:42:50 PM

With all the new craze of Pinterest and the fact that your photos lead people to your blog, I've been reading and seeing everywhere the importance of protecting your photos.  Since my blog is all about my very own creation that I want to keep safe, I really want to watermark things, but as of now, I have to go open up a photo and type text over each one.

Picasa has an option to export with watermark, but it leaves it way down at the bottom corner, which would be easily cropped out...

Do any of you watermark your photos?  Do you have a program?  Do you even CARE if someone steals your photos?

I just got a new camera for Christmas so I'm putting a lot more pictures on my blog. I put my blog name on the bottom of my pictures using Paint. I guess they can always chop it off if they want, but I really don't want to put my name in the middle of my pictures, ya know!

I don't want to put anything in the middle of my pics either. I put my name and year in the bottom corner.

People have all kinds of things they can do so even if you have a watermark they can remove it if they want to do so.

Yeah, I know this, but most people won't bother with that.  My issue is that we're trying to look into copyright laws and trademarking for the show that we're trying to create and the characters that I've created, so its more than just not wanting people to steal my photos.  I don't mind having a watermark in the middle of my photos, either, I just don't want to have to go and do each one individually.

I started put my name and blog url on my photos ~ as I went to one site and there was a photo that looked vaguely familiar ~ didn't want to 'get into it' so I try to protect myself as much as possible ~ Those that will take your photos and claim them as theirs will do it no matter what you do ~ I think ~

This is a photo of my daughter's illustration for a children's book, I put a small watermark with copyright info and my blog in a conspicuous place, but still in a place that would be annoying to try and remove.  I know someone could still do it, but I like to think that by making it at least a little difficult to take it that less people will likely do it.

And I really want to protect my daughter's creations.

Marking your photos won't stop anyone from stealing them, no.

A friend suggested that one should mark photos not so much for protection, but just so that people know where they saw it.  Made sense to me, so I mark mine.

I don't like text going across my pictures, either, so I have been using a watermark in the bottom corner.

I'm thinking of experimenting with a true watermark diag across. Yeah, a professional could remove it, an amateur just sharing a pretty picture wouldn't bother.

I think it's a bit more serious for artists and their original work, though.  Yes, I would use a proper watermark in that case.

Do you know of any software that lets you do this in bulk?

I am concerned about the same things too. You are right about anyone taking your pics if they want to.

I got emails afrom someone about not doing Pinterst right. I admitted I did it backwards. I was repining merrily, then going to sites later as I had more time. I pinned things I truley wanted to keep track of. I had not relaizied I was suppose to repin from teh source. too late I have my unprotected work out hier too. Yesterday, I deleted all of my boards, not knowing what else to do.

I have to learn to water mark ASAP to protect my pics on my blog. I was told to put a note under pic that you don't allow pinning. I am overwhelmed here. Help anyone when you figure out the best way to paint or water mark. I am all ears. Malika

I too use picasa to watermark my pictures but use the ADD text function instead of insert a watermark. I normally place the name of my blog + yr the photo is taken 3/4 down the picture. Have been thinking of using more fancy watermark but will have to get photoshop or other photo editing software first.
